🇬🇧 From London to Amami 🌿

今回はロンドンから来てくださったご家族と、2日間一緒に奄美を巡りました！

このご家族、とにかくみんな仲良し☺️
お父さんもお母さんも子どもたちも、何をするにもみんな一緒になって楽しんでいる姿がとても印象的でした。

1日目は、ハートロックや前肥田のガジュマルなど、奄美のいろんな景色を楽しみながら、泥染め・藍染め体験へ！

Tシャツやバッグ、スカーフなど、それぞれ好きなものを選んでみんなで挑戦✨

ちょうど奄美の旧暦の七夕だったので、夢おりの郷さんがご用意くださった短冊に、みんなで願い事を書いて笹に飾ることもできました🎋
こういう、その日にしか出会えない体験も旅の楽しさのひとつ。

2日目は住用のマングローブでカヌー🛶
そしてみんな、めちゃくちゃ上手＆速い😂

途中、木を登る小さなカニを見つけて「ギャー！」となったり🦀😂
みんなで笑いながらマングローブを楽しみました！

さらにマングローブパークでは、同じく奄美に来ていたお母さんのお姉さんご夫婦とまさかの遭遇！

最後の夜はみんなでBBQをするということで、「美味しいお肉が食べたい！」のリクエストに、最後は私の家族もいつもお世話になっているお肉屋さんへ🥩

観光地を巡るだけじゃなく、その日の出会いや偶然も一緒に楽しめた2日間。

とっても温かくて優しいご家族で、私も一緒にたくさん笑わせてもらいました☺️

大切な家族旅行の2日間をAmami Ugadi Experienceと一緒に過ごしてくださって、本当にありがとうございました🌺

🇬🇧 Two days in Amami with this lovely family from London!

What I loved most was seeing how much they genuinely enjoyed doing everything together☺️

Day 1 was all about Amami’s scenery, culture, and traditional mud & indigo dyeing. It was also Tanabata on Amami’s lunar calendar, and thanks to Yumeori no Sato, everyone got to write a wish and hang it on bamboo🎋

Day 2 took us to the mangroves of Sumiyo🛶
And wow—they could paddle! Everyone was so good and SO fast😂

We spotted tiny crabs climbing the mangrove trees, which caused a few screams and lots of laughs🦀😂

We even unexpectedly ran into the mother’s sister and her husband at Mangrove Park!

They were having a family BBQ that night, so our final stop was a local butcher my own family has been going to for years🥩

Two days full of nature, culture, laughter, unexpected encounters, and wonderful family moments.

台風後の奄美で、無事に今回のツアーを迎えることができました🏝️✨

今回は、スロバキアから来た5人家族をご案内🇸🇰

前日まで「今の奄美をどう伝えるべきなんだろう」と悩んでいましたが、当日は美しい自然だけでなく、台風の被害や復旧、そこで暮らす人たちのこともお話ししました。(先輩方、ご助言ありがっさまりょうた🙏✨)

ご家族が特に驚いていたのは、高齢化が進む集落でも、地域の人たちが力を合わせ、停電や孤立を乗り越えていること。

「電気がなければ生活することさえ難しい今の時代に、みんなで助け合って乗り越えていることがすごい」

その言葉がとても印象に残りました。

大和村と宇検村では、それぞれ地元の方と直接お話しする機会もあり、とても嬉しそうでした😊

そして、とにかく好奇心いっぱいのご家族！
特に3人の子どもたちからは質問が次々と😂 私もたくさん勉強になりました。

私もスロバキアや隣国ウクライナをはじめ、周辺のヨーロッパの国々についてたくさん教えてもらいました🇸🇰🌍

前日までたくさん悩んだけれど、このご家族に今の奄美をご案内できて本当によかった！

こんなにも奄美を知ろうとしてくれるゲストが来てくれることを、とても嬉しく思った一日でした😊✨

After the typhoon, we were thankfully able to go ahead with this tour in Amami 🏝️✨

This time, I guided a wonderful family of five from Slovakia 🇸🇰

Until the day before, I had been wondering how I should show Amami as it is now. During the tour, we talked not only about its beautiful nature, but also about the typhoon damage, recovery, and the people living in these communities.

They were especially impressed by how people in aging communities work together to overcome power outages and isolation.

“In a time when it’s so difficult to live without electricity, it’s amazing how people support each other and get through it together.”

That really stayed with me.

In both Yamato and Uken, they also had opportunities to talk with local people, which they really enjoyed 😊

And what a curious family! Their three children especially had question after question 😂 I learned a lot from them too.

In return, they taught me so much about Slovakia, neighboring Ukraine, and other European countries 🇸🇰🌍

After all my worries the day before, I’m truly glad I could show them Amami as it is now.

It made me so happy to welcome guests who genuinely wanted to know more about our island 😊✨

【ガイドとして、今回の台風で考えさせられたこと。】

昨日は住用、名瀬、大和村へ。
今日は大和村から宇検村へ。

今週、5月からご予約いただいている外国人ご家族のツアーを控えています。

安全にご案内できるのか、いつも通りの時間配分で大丈夫なのか。
自分の目で確認するため、実際のツアールートを中心に島を巡りました。

名瀬は昨日と今日だけでも分かるくらい復旧が進んでいました。

でも大和村、宇検村に入ってびっくり。
至るところの道が林道のようになり、倒木、落石、土砂崩れ。

大和村と宇検村ではそれぞれ車を停め、落石を退かしたり、道路に散乱した枝や葉っぱを掃除したりしました。

そして宇検村に入って、ある気持ちが芽生えました。

3、4日も停電が続き、地元の方々が土砂を退かしながら、やっとかっと生活している中に、

「お客さんを連れてきてもいいんだろうか。」
「私の仕事って、本当に島の人にとっていいことなんだろうか。」

不安になり、先輩・一文兄ムルフィール_巡めぐる恵めぐるがいる「ケンムンの館」へ。

停電中でもお店は開いていて、電気自動車はすでに3台目。車から電気を取り、冷蔵庫と冷凍庫を冷やし続けていました。

しかも一文兄は、鹿児島で手術を終えたばかりの病み上がり。

正直に気持ちを話すと、

「シマの人っち、名瀬の人が思ってるより台風や土砂崩れに慣れてるよ。でも今回は長かったんだけどね。彩佳の配慮は偉いと思う。
知り合いにあったら「台風大丈夫だった？」ちきいてごらん。

ツアーでは、逆に、このリアルな奄美をお客さんに見せたらいいんじゃない？
奄美は台風が来るとこうなって、集落のみんなで復旧するんですっち。」

その言葉を聞いて思いました。

今は平常時の60％くらいの生活になっている場所もあるかもしれない。
それでも、5月から楽しみにしてくださっていたご家族が奄美に来てくれる。

だったら私は、綺麗な景色だけじゃなく、
島の人たちが台風をどう受け止め、どう日常を取り戻していくのか。

その気持ちまで“翻訳”できるガイドになろう。

心配して宇検村に入ったはずなのに、
帰る頃には、また私の方が元気をもらっていました。

いつも私を元気にしてくださる宇検村の皆さん、ありがとうございます🤗

【As a guide, this typhoon made me think.】

Yesterday I visited Sumiyo, Naze and Yamato, and today Yamato and Uken, checking the routes for a family who booked with me back in May.

Naze was recovering quickly, but in Yamato and Uken I saw fallen trees, rocks and landslides.

As I entered Uken, I wondered:

“Is it really okay to bring guests here now?
Is my work actually good for the people who live here?”

I shared this with my senior, Ichifumi.

He told me that people in Uken are used to living through typhoons, and said:

“Maybe you can show your guests this real Amami too—how communities work together to recover.”

Something clicked.

My job isn’t only to translate languages or show beautiful scenery.

I want to translate how islanders face nature, support each other and bring everyday life back.

I entered Uken worried.
But once again, I left feeling encouraged.

To the people of Uken who always lift me up,

🌀 Typhoon tips for anyone visiting Amami Oshima

The typhoon is starting to move away from Amami, but I wanted to share a few things that might be helpful for travelers — for this typhoon and for the next one too.

Living on an island means typhoons affect us a little differently.

Many of our everyday supplies come from outside Amami by ship. Before a typhoon, deliveries can stop and supermarket shelves can empty quickly. And even after the typhoon has passed, it can take some time for ships and deliveries to return to normal.

So if you’re staying in Amami when a typhoon is approaching, prepare a little earlier than you normally would. 🌿

Get some drinking water and food that you can eat without electricity, fill up your rental car if you have one, charge your devices, and keep some Japanese yen cash with you.

And please — only buy what you need so there’s enough for everyone. 🙏

A little local tip: Green Store is a locally owned supermarket that works really hard to support the community, even during typhoons. 💚

Most importantly, stay inside when conditions are dangerous. The ocean, rivers and mountain roads can remain dangerous even when the weather seems to be getting better.

ALTのミナちゃんが奄美を離れる前に、一緒に宇検村へ行ってきました🌿

さんで美味しいランチを食べながら、昔の奄美の人々の暮らしや、受け継がれてきた価値観について話したり、車の中では一緒にラップで盛り上がったり…😂🎶

お互いにたくさん話して、たくさん笑って、たくさん学んだ一日でした。

宇検村役場でトイレをお借りしたあと、「せっかくだし観光課にも顔を出してみよう！」と思い立ち、お邪魔することに😂

急な訪問で驚かせてしまったと思いますが、役場の皆さんや元山村長は温かく迎えてくださいました😆✨

その後、シマのスペシャリストの雄大さんが、
ご厚意で宇検村の素敵なネイチャースポットを案内してくださいました🤗

本当にありがとうございました🙏✨

自然の美しさはもちろんですが、人との出会いや、受け継がれてきた文化に触れる時間こそ、私にとって奄美の一番の魅力です💚

Before Yazmina left Amami, we spent a day exploring Uken Village together. 🌿

Over lunch, we talked about the history of Amami, how people used to live, and the values that have been passed down through generations.

We also had so much fun singing along to rap music in the car. 😂🎶

It was one of those days where we shared stories, laughed a lot, and learned from each other.

After stopping by the Uken Village Office, I thought, “Since we’re already here, why don’t we say hello to the Tourism Division?” 😂

I’m sure our unexpected visit came as a surprise, but everyone at the village office—including the village mayor—welcomed us so warmly. 😆✨

Afterwords, Yudai-san who was born & raised in Uken warmly welcomed us and generously showed us around the village. Thank you so much for your kindness!

Days like this remind me that Amami’s greatest treasures aren’t only its beautiful landscapes, but also its people and the culture they continue to pass on. 💚

From exciting Funakogi races to the sounds of Shimauta and cheers accompanied by traditional drums, I got to spend a whole day surrounded by Amami’s culture and energy 🌺🚣

One of my favorite parts was meeting people and experiencing the atmosphere behind the scenes.

Funakogi is more than a race. Traditionally, boats were once essential to island life in Amami, and today Funakogi continues as a celebration of teamwork, community, and culture.
