When I was a child, adults told us,
“Don’t step on the roots.”

At that time, I didn’t fully understand why.

Now I realize —
this was how we learned to respect nature.

These tree tunnels protected our villages.

Living with nature is not something special here.
It is simply our everyday life.

鹿児島で通訳ガイド研修を受け、
薩摩の歴史を学びました。

奄美出身の私にとって、
この歴史は簡単に向き合えるものではありません。

奄美の歴史の痛みに胸を打たれながらも、
同時に島津家が成し遂げたことの大きさにも
改めて気づかされました。

鹿児島の人にとっての島津家と、
奄美の人にとっての島津家。
そこには大きな感情の違いがあります。

だからこそ、
本当に起きた歴史を学び、
互いを尊重することが大切だと感じました。

この歴史を生き延びてきた
奄美の先人たちの力強さ。
それも、私がガイドになると決めた理由の一つです。

I joined an interpreter-guide training in Kagoshima to learn about Satsuma history.

As someone from the Amami Islands, this history is not easy to face.

While I felt the pain in Amami’s history,
I was also impressed by the achievements of the Shimazu family.

The Shimazu family can mean pride in Kagoshima
and very different feelings in Amami.

That is why I believe learning the real history
and respecting one another matters.

The strength of the people of Amami who lived through this history
is also one of the reasons I decided to become a guide.

Last night’s tour reminded us of something important.

Before entering the forest, we honestly didn’t know what we would find.
It was raining, and in wildlife guiding, nothing is ever guaranteed.

But in Amami, rain often brings life closer.

With the incredible support of
we entered the forest together with guests visiting from Australia and California — passionate birders who travel the world in search of nature’s rare moments.

As the night unfolded, the forest slowly revealed itself.
Throughout the night, we were fortunate to encounter several protected and endangered species unique to Amami.

Amami Rabbit.
Amami Woodcock.
Ryukyu Long-haired Rat.
Endemic frogs appearing along rain-soaked roads.

And finally, the moment everyone had been hoping for —
the Ryukyu Scops Owl.

Moments like these are never promised.
That uncertainty is part of what makes each night special.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable experiences begin with not knowing what awaits us.

All wildlife was observed respectfully from a distance.

Thank you to our wonderful guests,
and deep appreciation to for all the support throughout the night.

Grateful for another truly Amami-like Ugadi — a rare and meaningful encounter.

昨日のナイトツアーは、改めて「奄美らしさ」を感じる夜でした。

森へ入る前、雨の中でどんな出会いがあるのかは正直分かりませんでした。
自然相手のツアーに、約束はありません。

でも奄美では、雨が降ると森の空気が変わります。
森がまさに「生きてる」と感じる夜でした🌳

オーストラリアとカリフォルニアから来てくれた、
世界中の国立公園を巡るバーディング好きのお二人のゲストと一緒に、
さんの力をお借りして森へ。

夜が進むにつれ、森に棲む生き物たちが、少しずつ姿を見せてくれました。
この夜は、絶滅危惧種や天然記念物に指定されている生き物たちとの出会いにも恵まれました。

アマミノクロウサギ。
アマミヤマシギ。
ケナガネズミ。
そして、雨に濡れた道路に現れるアマミイシカワガエルとアマミハナサキガエル。

そして最後に、
皆がどうしても会いたかったリュウキュウコノハズク。

こういう瞬間は、決して当たり前ではありません。
だからこそ、特別なんだと思います。

何が起こるか分からない。
でも、それがあるからこそ面白い。

素敵なゲストのお二人、
そして柔軟にご対応してくださった
さんに心から感謝です。

また一つ、「奄美らしい」うがでぃ（出会い）に恵まれた夜でした。

I welcomed the New Year wearing my mother’s Oshima Tsumugi.

Oshima Tsumugi is a traditional silk kimono fabric from Amami,
carefully dyed and woven by hand over a long period of time.

Not just sightseeing,
but moments worth remembering.

Ugadi means “encounters” in the Amami dialect.

Ugadi is where stories, people,
and places come together in Amami.

景色の、その先へ。

ただ見るだけの旅ではなく、
心に残る時間を。

「うがでぃ」は、奄美の方言で
“出会い”という意味です。

人と、物語と、場所が出会う場所。
奄美のうがでぃ。
