Yakuno Town in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto, has been renowned since ancient times as one of the major centers for urushi—Japanese lacquer—production. For generations, artisans here have harvested lacquer using the traditional “Tamba Urushi-kaki” (Tamba lacquer tapping) technique, which has been officially designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kyoto Prefecture.

The story of urushi cultivation in Yakuno—once discontinued and later revived by dedicated local volunteers—is also deeply inspiring. Today, domestically produced urushi accounts for only about 6% of the total in Japan, making Yakuno one of its most valuable production hubs.

At Yakuno Ki-to-Urushi-no-Yakata (Yakuno Museum of Wood and Lacquer), you can experience this tradition firsthand. Try a range of activities, including maki-e (lacquer decoration using gold powder), kintsugi-style art, and etsuke (lacquer painting and decorating). Choose a bowl or plate from a selection of items in the shop and create your own unique design🎨

You can take your piece home the same day, but be patient—it takes about three months to fully dry before it can be used. A small but special gift for your future self✨

Katsuura Fishing Port : A Unique Spectacle of Japan’s Finest Fresh Tuna

As the sun rises over Katsuura, it reveals a sight found nowhere else in the world. This port boasts the largest catch of fresh, never-frozen tuna in Japan, harvested using traditional longline fishing methods.

The spectacle of hundreds of massive tuna laid out across the market floor is truly unique—a visual feast that can only be witnessed here. Because the fish are kept on ice and never frozen from the moment they are caught, they retain a pristine luster and unparalleled flavor. This powerful display is a testament to the rich bounty of the Kuroshio Current and the living heritage of the local fishing community.

Exploring the Fukuchiyama Abandoned Railway Trail

a quiet path where old tracks, tunnels, and nature blend beautifully. Such a peaceful hike between Nishinomiya and Takarazuka. The autumn colors are now at their peak, making the trail even more stunning. It’s about a 2.5-hour route that’s beginner-friendly, but some tunnels are quite dark, so bringing a flashlight is recommended.
