Otagi Nenbutsu Temple: A Ghibli-Inspired Wonderland 🏯✨

We couldn't wait to spill the beans about this enchanting spot we stumbled upon in Arashiyama, Kyoto. The Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple is a hidden gem that we absolutely loved, a secret escape from the bustling crowds and it's straight out of a Ghibli movie! 🍃💫

Imagine wandering through a green lush forest decorated with 1200 whimsical statues, each with its own captivating charm and story. 🗿✨

In 1955, a new head priest named Kocho Nishimura revitalized the temple, inviting visitors to carve their own unique "rakan" statues representing Buddha's disciples under his guidance, which now bear the charm of age covered with moss. Because each statue was carved by a different person, each one is completely unique, and many have humorous expressions. 🙃

Here are some tips to help you planning your day trip to Nara:

• If you are traveling from Osaka Namba Station take the Kintetsu-Nara Rapid Express train to the Kintetsu Nara station, which is the nearest train station to the Nara park. (39 minutes for 560 yen ~ 3.77€)
• you can buy crackers for the deers at almost every corner, 10 crackers for 200 yen (1.35€)
• from the station is only a short walk to Kofuku-ji Temple, a complex of Buddhist temple halls where you can find sleepy deers around
• if you are visiting during sakura season, don't miss the Sagi Ike Pond, it's truly a wonderful sight 🌸
• on your way to Isuien garden, make sure to make a brief stop at Himuro Jinja, you can discover your fortune in a unique way, by laying a piece of paper on an ice cube which will reveal your fate
• after visiting Isuien garden, take a stroll through the Nara park and head to Kasuga-Taisha shrine, which is famous for the thousands of stone and bronze lanterns that line the paths leading up to the shrine and you can of course spot some deers here too
• don't miss the Todai-ji temple, which houses one of the largest bronze statues of Buddha in the world
• on your way back home, stop at Nakatanidou and try the famous japanese Mochi

9 - Namba Yasaka Shrine: in this Buddhist shrine the huge open mouth of the lion will swallow any evil spirits plaguing you, leaving you only good luck 🍀
