💳 My 10 Credit Card Rules (That Keep Me Out of Debt)
Whenever I talk about credit cards, someone always says:
"Nakakatakot ang credit card. Baka mabaon sa utang."
The truth is...
A credit card isn't what gets people into debt.
Poor spending habits do.
I've always believed that a credit card should be a financial tool, not a way to afford a lifestyle you can't actually pay for.
These are the 10 rules I follow every time I use a credit card.
1. 💰 If I Can't Pay in Cash, I Don't Swipe.
Before using my credit card, I ask myself:
"Do I already have the money in my bank account?"
If the answer is no...
I don't buy it.
2. 💳 Treat Your Credit Card Like a Debit Card.
The only difference is who pays first.
With a debit card, you pay immediately.
With a credit card, the bank pays first.
3. ✅ Always Pay the FULL Statement Balance.
Not the minimum.
Not half.
The full statement balance.
Paying in full on time generally helps you avoid interest on purchases and lets you enjoy the card's benefits without unnecessary borrowing costs.
4. 📅 Never Miss a Due Date.
Late payments can lead to late fees and may affect your credit history.
I set reminders, or better yet, use auto-debit if it fits my budgeting style.
5. 📊 Track Every Swipe.
Every purchase goes into my budget.
Just because payment comes later doesn't mean the expense disappears.
Delayed payment is not delayed spending.
6. 🎁 Never Spend Just for Rewards.
I've seen people buy unnecessary things just to earn cashback or airline miles.
That's backwards.
Rewards should come from purchases you were already planning to make.
7. 💵 Avoid Cash Advances.
Cash advances often come with fees and interest that may start immediately, depending on your card's terms.
Unless it's a genuine emergency, I avoid using this feature.
8. 💳 Don't Max Out Your Credit Limit.
A high credit limit isn't an invitation to spend more.
It's simply the maximum amount your bank is willing to lend.
Spend according to your budget, not your available limit.
9. 📄 Read Your Statement Every Month.
Don't just pay the bill.
Review it.
Checking your statement regularly helps you spot unauthorized transactions, subscription renewals, or billing errors early.
10. ❤️ Choose a Card That Matches Your Lifestyle.
Not everyone needs a travel card.
Not everyone needs cashback.
Not everyone needs premium benefits.
Choose the card that fits how you spend.
A credit card should make your existing spending more rewarding—not encourage you to spend more.
My Biggest Rule of All
A credit card should never make you richer today and poorer tomorrow.
It should simply make paying for the things you already budgeted for more convenient and, in some cases, more rewarding.
When used responsibly, a credit card can help you earn rewards, enjoy purchase protections, and build a positive credit history.
When used carelessly, it can become expensive.
The difference isn't the card.
It's the habits behind it.
