🔵Wander around the Wonderful World of Wax🔵
Kokkou Industrial Co. has lots of secrets to its success as the biggest candle maker in Kyushu. One is that it has been making a constant effort to improve its product quality by providing candles to religious institutions and for funeral rituals.
At those places, candles that can meet strict criteria are sought: pure white in colour and being able to keep burning steadily. A candle going out in the middle of a ritual could be taken as an ominous sign, and they must produce as little soot and odour as possible so that the venues can stay clean.
To achieve these objectives, the candle maker uses top-notch waxes and utilises their craftspeople’s skills and knowledge. Candle making can be tricky because wax is easily affected by humidity and air temperature.
These efforts have led to widespread recognition from various candle artists throughout Japan, and in addition to that, their candles are used at various festivals including Tobata Gion Yamagasa Festival [戸畑祇園大山笠], one of UNESCO’S Intangible Cultural Heritages.
Factory tours are available so everyone can see how candles are made.
Candle making workshops, which are now suspended due to COVID-19, are planned to be restarted once the pandemic is over.
