We’re so lucky to have such a precious dagashi-ya in our neighborhood. Dagashi literally means “cheap sweets,” and dagashi-ya, small, old-fashioned candy shops, used to be found in every neighborhood, though they’re becoming quite rare now. Each item typically costs just 20–100 yen, and kids used to learn how to add things up and manage what they could afford within a small budget. It’s also a fun place for parents, bringing back lots of childhood memories.

A Shinto shrine in my neighborhood displays beautiful flowers in the water basins where worshippers wash their hands and rinse their mouths before praying. These floral arrangements are called hana-chozu. They’re not a traditional decoration, this practice started relatively recently at a temple in Kyoto before COVID, and has since spread across Japan. It looks really beautiful and adds a fun, refreshing touch.

I got discharged yesterday after spending five days in the hospital. Honestly, it turned out to be a pretty meaningful, and even kind of interesting experience.

By the way, the total cost for five nights with pneumonia came to about ¥130,000 (around $810) after insurance. In Japan, health insurance is universal and mandatory, and it usually covers about 70% of medical costs. There’s also a system called the High-Cost Medical Expense Benefit, which caps what you have to pay each month based on your income. Plus, a lot of people in Japan have private insurance with relatively low monthly premiums that cover unexpected hospital stays or surgeries. So in my case, I might actually end up making a bit of money after everything is settled 😅

I saw an airplane about to land at Haneda Airport, and by coincidence, a bullet train appeared right beneath it. Most travelers arrive in Tokyo via either Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport. However, since Haneda is located in Ota City, Tokyo, it’s much closer to central Tokyo than Narita, which is in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture.

Now, the term anime is recognized worldwide, but people from outside Japan are sometimes surprised by how deeply it is rooted in Japanese society. It even appears in areas typically associated with adults, such as the beer industry, lotteries, and pachinko (can be said casino). For example, Suntory Black Label beer has featured Neon Genesis Evangelion to commemorate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. While this kind of collaboration might be seen as controversial elsewhere, in Japan it’s quite common.

A beautiful set of samurai armor and a helmet, along with arrows and a sword, is on display in the lobby of the Keio Plaza Hotel, accompanied by gorgeous irises. You can see similar decorations all over Japan at this time of year to celebrate Tango no Sekku, or Boys’ Day, which falls on May 5th.

These days, it’s known as Children’s Day and is a national holiday. In Japan, there are five seasonal festivals called sekku, which originally came from ancient China. They reflect harmony with nature, good health, and wishes for happiness.

The other sekku are celebrated on January 7th, March 3rd, July 7th, and September 9th.

It’s a really nice view from my hospital room. I’ve been here since Monday night after being diagnosed with pneumonia, and I’ll probably need to stay for at least a week.

This is my first time ever being hospitalized, and today is my third day here. So far, it’s been surprisingly comfortable and almost stress-free. The doctors and nurses are kind and friendly, and the other patients in my room are quiet and calm.

The only thing I’m struggling with is the food. I wouldn’t usually call myself picky—I generally have a pretty tolerant palate—but for some reason, I just can’t seem to handle most of the meals here. 😭

A very unique, sphere-like structure stands next to the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower. It was designed by the renowned Japanese architectural firm Tange, originally established by the legendary architect Kenzo Tange, who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

The sphere was built as a multipurpose hall, and together with the main tower, the project was designed by his son, Paul Tange Kenko. In contrast, his father’s iconic work, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, can also be seen in the same area of Shinjuku.

I think it’s amazing how you can experience both generations of architectural vision in one city.

We spotted some deer on our way to the 5th Station. Mount Fuji is known for its rich wildlife, but encountering wild animals there is quite rare.

There are four 5th stations on Mt. Fuji. Among them, this one is the highest point accessible by vehicle. There are no shops—only a few temporary toilets—but the atmosphere is incredible.

Numerous Ema (wooden wishing tablets) were hung at Suga Shrine near the iconic “Your Name” stairs. It was fascinating to see wishes written so many different languages. Even now, people continue to visit this place to relive their memories of the anime movie.

Hokusai, the famous Japanese woodblock print artist best known for The Great Wave off Kanagawa, also created a piece showing a tea plantation in what used to be Suruga Province. It’s part of his well-known series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (which actually includes more than 36 prints).

Some people believe the scene represents Obuchi Sasaba in present-day Fuji City. However, others point out that the image doesn’t show much detail of an actual tea plantation or the specific season, suggesting that Hokusai may not have visited the spot himself.
