Explosion of Hazardous Cargo Forces Crew to Abandon Container Ship in the Red Sea

A large fire broke out aboard a Hong Kong-flagged container ship in the Red Sea following an explosion linked to hazardous cargo on board, according to maritime security company Ambrey. The incident forced the ship's crew to abandon the vessel.

The ship, named ASL Bauhinia with a capacity of 1,800 TEU (IMO: 9935868), was sailing north through the Red Sea when the explosion occurred, igniting the cargo. The fire was reported at 23:00 GMT on January 27, while the vessel was located 122 nautical miles northwest of the port of Hodeidah.

Diaplous Security Group reported that the ship is currently on fire and drifting northwest along the coast of Hodeidah in Yemen. Reports indicate that the explosion was due to the presence of hazardous cargo aboard the vessel, causing significant damage and preventing control of the fire.

The ship had departed from the Port of Jebel Ali in Dubai on January 22 and was heading to the Port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, with plans to continue to Aqaba in Jordan. However, the fire forced the crew to abandon the ship on Tuesday morning, and they were later rescued by another passing vessel, according to the Associated Press.
