We didn’t get to the house until 5pm, so there was no time to sit and relax before the evening started. Open up the house, shower, get ready, go. Everyone was starving and more than ready for a cocktail, no easing into it slowly. First stop was Enoteca del Mare, our go-to for aperitivo every single year, then dinner at Ristorante Michele Chinappi, a meal that always makes the long day worth it. Exhausted, starving, and exactly where we wanted to be. That’s arrival day.

Before this trip, every video I saw about the new EES system warned of hours-long lines and total chaos. That’s not what we experienced. We spent about ten minutes total in line, scanning our passports and having our photo taken, no crowd crush, no nightmare scenario. I also saw countless posts pushing paid VIP fast-track services, some over $600, promising to walk you through EES without the wait. Based on our actual experience, that’s money spent solving a problem that, for us, didn’t exist. Airports and timing can vary, so this isn’t a guarantee for everyone, everywhere. But before you spend hundreds of dollars on a skip-the-line service, know that a completely normal, unpaid experience is very possible.

Not every trip starts smoothly, and this one didn’t. Our flight from New York had a mechanical issue before we even left the ground, we were deplaned, and we sat there for hours not knowing what would happen next. We were offered a reroute through Paris instead of flying direct to Rome, but decided to stick it out for our original flight. Five hours later, we finally took off, and when we landed, our rental car wasn’t there even though we’d notified the company about the delay. Pazienza was the word of the day. Va bene così, it’s fine as it is, became our mantra, because being in Italy was the whole goal, the whole dream, and that’s what we had to keep holding onto. Staying calm didn’t change the delay, but it completely changed how the day felt.

And then this: a Canadair skimming low across the sky, something you don’t see on just any beach day. Everyone kept swimming like it was nothing. Just another beautiful, slightly unexpected moment in Formia.
