In 2 days I’ll be doing exactly this. I never sleep well on the plane, so instead of fighting it, I lean into staying awake the entire first day and forcing my body straight onto Italian time. Land, grab the bags, get the rental car, drop bags at the house, then straight out to a real sit-down lunch. A quick supermarket stop for water and coffee, back to shower and unpack, then right back out the door for aperitivo, a long dinner, and a passeggiata after. By the time we’re back, we’re actually tired, real Italian-time tired, not jet lag tired. It’s exhausting, but it works every single time.

These are the words that greet you the second you step off the plane in Italy, and knowing them before you land makes that first hour so much smoother. Controllo passaporti for passport control, ritiro bagagli for baggage claim, uscita for exit, and bar for the coffee counter, not a nightclub, where you’ll pay at the cassa before you order. Add in taxi, stazione, autonoleggio, and bagno, and you’ve got everything you need to move through an Italian airport like you’ve done it before. Save this before your next trip.

Counting down the days until August in Italy. Fresh fish and buffalo mozzarella in Formia, tomatoes that taste like nothing back home, mornings that start with un caffè and end in the sea, swimming into coastal caves, afternoon riposo because the heat demands it, aperitivo before long dinners at our favorite restaurants, la passeggiata after dark, and late nights at the wine bar before doing it all again the next day. This is the rhythm of an Italian summer, and I’m ready for every single day of it.

Planning an Italy trip yourself is completely doable, but there are a few blind spots that show up again and again, and they’re rarely cheap ones. Chasing the most photographed towns instead of the ones that actually fit your pace. Packing too many cities into too few days. Trusting outdated schedules for trains and ferries that don’t run the way they used to. Missing the booking window on the hotel or restaurant that was exactly right. And the tourist taxes, transfers, and entrance fees that never show up in the flight-and-hotel number people budget around. None of these mean you can’t plan it yourself. They just mean the margin for error is bigger than most people expect. Save this before you book anything.
