Lately, there seems to be a day for absolutely everything don’t you think ?

Because perhaps all these slightly awkward and sometimes amusing celebrations reveal something profoundly human about us.
We long to remember. We long to honour.
We long to say:
"This mattered. You mattered."

And if we are willing to celebrate coffee, planets, and who knows what else, then surely there is something rather lovely about occasionally celebrating the day our own story began… and the countless quiet milestones that have accompanied us along the way. ❤️

I think I’ve written about milestones so many times… ❤️ But maybe that’s because they matter.
Maybe it’s six months of dating, because let’s be honest… these days, surviving six months together deserves a celebration! 😄
And if six months are worth celebrating, just imagine 25 years… 50 years… 60 years… 70… even 80 years together.
Wow.
Which is why I come back to this topic again and again.
Because I’m wondering…
Who out there is approaching an important milestone?
An anniversary?
A birthday?
A retirement?
A reunion?

Whatever chapter you’re about to begin, perhaps it’s time to turn it into a memory.

For those of you visiting the Vatican, keep an eye out for the remarkable sculpture Angels Unawares by Timothy Schmalz, commissioned by Pope Francis and installed in St. Peter’s Square in November 2019.

Many visitors never notice that Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus are hidden among the crowded boat of migrants and refugees. In fact, they are not placed at the front where we might expect to find them. Instead, they are immersed within the crowd itself.

This was intentional.

The sculpture invites the viewer to search for the Holy Family among the displaced, the forgotten, and the stranger. It asks a profound question:

If Mary, Joseph, and Jesus appeared before us today as refugees, would we recognize them?

Perhaps the phone is not even the real problem.
Perhaps the real problem is that there are billions of minds competing for our attention every second of the day, while we are simultaneously trying to hear ourselves think. And when you finally find the way out. The endless demands begin fading away little by little, and suddenly you are no longer operating entirely from routine, you are simply there.
