🚄🇪🇸 SPAIN’S HIGH-SPEED RAIL BOOM CONTINUES! 🇪🇸🚅

Spain’s high-speed rail network carried a record 44.5 million passengers in 2025 — an impressive 12% increase compared with 2024 and double the number recorded in 2019. 📈

One of the biggest reasons? Competition. With Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo competing on major routes, passengers are getting more choice — and in many cases, lower fares.

🚆 Spain’s busiest high-speed corridors

🥇 Madrid–Barcelona: 14.4 million passengers
🥈 Madrid–Valencia: 6.2 million
🥉 Madrid–Seville: 5.9 million
4️⃣ Madrid–Málaga: 5.8 million
5️⃣ Madrid–Alicante: 4.5 million

💶 Competition is also pushing prices down.

Compared with 2019, inflation-adjusted fares were around:

🔻 50% lower on Madrid–Valencia
🔻 Around 40% lower on several other major corridors

In 2025, average fares included:

🇪🇸 Madrid–Valencia — €27.04
🇪🇸 Madrid–Alicante — €31.34
🇪🇸 Madrid–Málaga — €37.61
🇪🇸 Madrid–Seville — €38.41
🇪🇸 Madrid–Barcelona — €52.89

And rail is increasingly beating air travel. ✈️➡️🚆

On the Madrid–Barcelona corridor, trains accounted for an incredible 83.1% of the combined rail-and-air market.

🇪🇸 The competition is growing

Renfe remains the market leader, but Iryo and Ouigo are gaining ground.

On Madrid–Barcelona in Q4 2025:

🔴 Renfe — 56%
🟣 Iryo — 24%
🔵 Ouigo — 19%

Meanwhile, Iryo is expanding onto additional routes, while Alsa is also entering the tourist rail market with historic-train services.

And Spain could be heading toward another major change: authorities are considering opening Cercanías and Media Distancia services to competitive tendering — potentially bringing competition to the parts of the network used by hundreds of millions of passengers every year.

🌍 Spain is becoming one of Europe’s biggest laboratories for railway competition.

More operators.
More trains.
More passengers.
And potentially lower fares and stronger competition with airlines. 🚆🇪🇸

The numbers show just how enormous some national railway systems are. From the vast distances of the United States, China and Russia to India’s huge and highly electrified network, railways continue to play a crucial role in connecting people, cities and industries.
