The Panama Canal Authority is extending the temporary changes to due to forecasts of a .

Although water levels in have remained stable in recent days, the isthmus is experiencing a sharp drop in rainfall and forecasts indicate that the phenomenon will intensify for the remainder of 2026.

Conditions in the catchment area show a reduction of 34 per cent in accumulated rainfall and 44 per cent in water inflows during the hydrological year, making further measures necessary to ensure the sustainability of operations.

The new measures mainly concern the number of daily transits:

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟯 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: transits will fall from 34 to 32 per day, comprising 9 Neopanamax slots and 25 Panamax slots.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟱 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: Panamax transits will be further reduced to 23 slots per day.

The reduction in transits allows the upcoming draught restrictions to be postponed:

🔹 48 feet (14.63 metres) in the Neopanamax locks from 2 September.
🔹 47.5 feet (14.48 metres) from 1 October.

The reduction in transits is likely to increase waiting times for vessels without a booking, which currently stand at 8.5 days northbound and 7.7 days southbound. As of 20 August, there were 36 vessels waiting without a booking.

The shortage of slots has also driven up auction prices: a Seaspan container ship chartered by ONE paid around $4 million, whilst SK Shipping’s LNG carrier G. Arete set a new record, paying $4.6 million for a transit.

To curb speculation, the Authority will introduce:

🔺 separate auctions by vessel type and cargo;
🔺 limits on requests for multiple slots by the same customer;
🔺 priority for fully loaded Neopanamax container ships with higher TEU capacity.

The water level in Gatun Lake remains just above 84 feet, about one foot below the five-year average for August.

The NOAA forecasts an intensification of the weather phenomenon, potentially reaching a Super El Niño by October, with a nearly 70 per cent probability that it will become the strongest event on record by the end of 2026.

Un peu plus de sept ans après le lancement de l’𝗔𝗳𝗖𝗙𝗧𝗔 (African Continental Free Trade Area), la zone de libre-échange du , le développement de nombreux États membres a connu une accélération décisive, notamment celui du Nigéria — la plus grande économie du continent — qui, en 2024, a surmonté ses réticences initiales et les oppositions syndicales pour y adhérer avec conviction.

L’AfCFTA s’inscrit dans une dynamique mondiale où les pays émergents organisent des réseaux de pour se protéger des chocs extérieurs, en suivant des modèles similaires à ceux de la Communauté économique de l’ASEAN, de l’Union économique eurasienne et du CPTTP.

Contrairement à d’autres blocs commerciaux mondiaux, l’AfCFTA part d’un niveau d’intégration commerciale intracontinentale exceptionnellement faible.

L’héritage colonial a laissé des infrastructures orientées presque exclusivement vers l’exportation vers l’Europe, laissant de côté les liaisons entre pays voisins. Les politiques étatistes et protectionnistes qui ont suivi au cours des premières décennies après l’indépendance ont encore retardé l’intégration des chaînes de valeur.

Le continent doit désormais faire face à trois priorités stratégiques:

❇️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: Mobiliser 40 milliards de dollars par an dans les transports, la logistique et l’énergie afin d’éliminer les gaspillages dans la distribution des marchandises.
❇️ 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹: Favoriser la transition de l’économie informelle vers l’économie formelle, en améliorant la capacité fiscale des États.
❇️ 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲: Tirer parti de la très jeune moyenne d’âge de la population et de la diffusion des nouvelles technologies pour accélérer les processus d’intégration.

Ignorer la transformation du marché intérieur africain constitue une erreur stratégique.
