«In reality, having torn the orientalizing mask that disguised them, the Etruscans are the Italics of yesterday and today who appear to us in an impression of hallucinating consanguinity».

🟠 As you look at the surroundings of Città della Pieve, you are reminded of the landscapes painted by Pietro Vannucci, mostly known as Il Perugino, where the background is a distant view of hills sloping to a lake.

In fact, Perugino was born in Citta’ della Pieve around the year 1450.

The city preserves numerous works by the “Divine Painter”: the “Annunciation of the Magi” at the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, the “Baptism of Christ” and the “Virgin in Glory with Saints” in the Cathedral, which is dedicated to Saints Gervasio and Protasio, the “Deposition from the Cross” in Santa Maria dei Servi and “Sant’Antonio Abate with San Marcello and Paul the Hermit” in the Church of San Pietro.

🟠 Città della Pieve is a hill town in Umbria located at 508 meters above sea level. It is in the center of Central Italy, on the border between Tuscany and Umbria and not far from Lazio and overlooks the Val di Chiana valley and Lake Trasimeno.

The most important transport systems of Italy follow the valley below the city: the Rome-Florence railroad (Chiusi station is 8 km away) and the Autostrada del Sole highway (the Fabro on/off ramp is 17 km south, the Chiusi-Chianciano toll booth is 14 to the north).

The hill, shaped like a plateau with hillocks and ditches, consists of Pliocene sand deposits, river cobbles and shells of various sizes. This was a delta of the Ancient Tiber which flowed into the Ancient Thyrrenean Sea.

Città della Pieve has a vast and airy panorama: Monte Cimino to the south, Monte Peglia and the Monti Sibillini to the south-east, Montarale, the Nestore valley and Monte Subasio to the east, to the north the hills that border Lake Trasimento and, beyond the northern Val di Chiana, Mount Pratomagno.
The volcano Monte Amiata is to the west and, closer by, Monte Cetona.

🟠 “Città della Pieve, the most marvelous town in Umbria” is what Jacques Camille Broussolle, academic and historian of French art, declared in his essay “Umbrian Pilgrimage, notes on art and travel”, published in Paris in 1896.

Deeply knowledgeable about Umbria and its beauty, Broussolle wrote his observations after extensive travels in Umbria. His words express a unique sense of marvel and of fascination easily understood by those who know Città della Pieve.

We would like to offer every visitor to Città della Pieve the chance to feel the same sensations, to experience the same emotions, the same desire to stay as long as possible and to return. Over one hundred years later, the hill town has changed little.

Now, as then, Città della Pieve is not just another small town in Italy.

This is a brick-red island surrounded by the green sea of the Umbrian landscape.

Ancient popular traditions are preserved in Città della Pieve, a perfect example of the great history of Italy, of which the town maintains ample evidence.

This welcoming place inspires a sense of wonder, of well-being, of protection within its walls.

At the same time, Città della Pieve is the best base from which to explore the surrounding territory.

Città della Pieve is the center of a circle which includes Florence and Rome as the farthest points and contains the best parts of Italy, where nature, history and ancient traditions are blended in a fascinating mix.

🟠 Città della Pieve: a scattered museum.

Città della Pieve’s particular charm is due to the fact that, over time, architectural elements of various styles were added to the original medieval fabric in an imaginative and appropriate fashion. Thus diverse periods such as Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical are represented here, evidence of the vitality of the town to the present day.

Each of the following is a place of merit and a treasure chest of works of art of the greatest reputation: the Cathedral of Santi Gervasio and Protasio, the Civic Tower, Palazzo della Corgna, the Oratorio of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, the church of Sant’Agostino, the Oratorio of San Bartolomeo, the Fortress called Rocca Perugina, the church and civic museum of Santa Maria dei Servi, Palazzo Laval della Fargna, Teatro degli Avvaloranti, the Church of San Pietro.

🟠 The Terzieri: a melding of history and popular traditions.

The Terzieri, the three sections of town, are first mentioned in 1250 in the declaration of submission of ancient Castel della Pieve to Perugia. After too-brief a period of autonomy and self-rule ensured by the protection of Emperor Frederic II of Swabia, Castel della Pieve was once more subjected to Perugia.

The urban plan was established in the 13th C. and has remained unchanged to this day, divided into three sections: Castello, Borgo Dentro and Casalino.

🟠 The Terzieri, blending their innovative abilities, re-enact the ancient Bull Hunt every August. They challenge each other in an archery contest that aims at rotating outlines of three bulls of the local Chianina breed.

Native artist Maestro Antonio Marroni painted the historical “pallium”, the splendid, prized banner contended by the Terzieri. On August 15th, the “Day of the Challenge”, the Terziere which won the Pallium in the previous contest ceremoniously delivers it back to the Podesta’ di Castel della Pieve.

Over 800 characters wearing magnificent costumes parade through the center of town. They represent standard-bearers, priest and monks, warriors, noblemen, ladies and knights, peasants and fire-eaters.

This bloodless competition re-enacts the ancient Sienese “cacce”, a kind of bullfight still performed in Perugino’s time in Siena, the Ghibelline city esteemed by Castel della Pieve. Champion archers, three to a Terziere, have three arrows each to shoot their target, which rotates at three increasingly fast speeds.

🟠 As is stated in the Perugia Statute of 1279, Castel della Pieve produced saffron from at least the 13th C.. It must have been used also to dye textiles, because Castel della Pieve was an important producer of panno cremisi, a valuable cloth.

The cultivation of the saffron crocus was resumed in the 1970’s under the guidance of a local agronomist, Dr. Alberto Vigano’, whose determination and experience have made Citta’ della Pieve a nationally recognized producer of saffron.

The agricultural landscape surrounding Città della Pieve is the result of centuries of Man’s wise management. Città della Pieve’s hill is covered in olive groves and vineyards, making oil and wine the greatest assets of the town.

The oil, fruity in taste and of very low acidity, is produced by leccino, moraiolo and frantoio olives and is certified under the label “D.O.P. Colli Orvietani”.

The wine, mostly high quality red made with sangiovese, canaiolo and ciliegiolo grapes, is certified “D.O.C. Colli del Trasimeno”.
