📷Simon's been looking at old family photos from Champoluc and digging out some beauties, including this one of his and Ruth's wedding, April 15th, 2006, right here in Champoluc! ❤

Simon and Ruth have been welcoming guests on ski holidays in Champoluc for so long that the team even made a guard of honour with skis at their wedding all those moons ago!

How many of you have even older photos of holidays in Champoluc tucked away somewhere? We’d love to see some!

One of those autumn tasks that means winter is on its way! ❄️❄️❄️

Giada has been busy in the office sorting inventory for the upcoming season, making sure we have enough of all those little things that make the difference: the Ski Champoluc lanyards, Ski School certificate cards and those all-important Goat pin badges for all our Ski School Graduates!

Not to mention our fab range of Ski Champoluc merch - the flasks, coats, hoodies and more!

It might be the kind of menial task that people don't normally look forward to, but we LOVE them because they mean SKI SEASON IS COMING!!! ⛷️❄️🏔️🎿

We can't wait to start welcoming our wonderful guests!

Ski first ⛷️ Christmas rush later...🎄

If you're already checking the snow forecasts, wondering where you left your ski boots and counting down the weeks until you can get back on the mountain, why wait until after Christmas?

The lifts in Champoluc open on 28 November, and December’s a brilliant time to get your first turns of the winter in.

By mid-December, the ski season is in full swing, the village is getting ready for Christmas and there's that unmistakable excitement of winter being back in the mountains.

For families who can get away before Christmas, make it a full week and start the festivities in the Italian Alps.

Or, if you can steal a few days away, we're putting together short breaks for adults who simply can't wait any longer to get back on their skis.

People often ask us which hotels we recommend, or which one we’d choose ourselves 🤔

The truth is, there isn’t one “best” hotel in Champoluc. It depends completely on who’s travelling and what sort of holiday they want.

But for families, there is one that comes up again and again, and that's Hotel Petit Tournalin.

There are lots of things we look for when choosing hotels for Ski Champoluc families, but sometimes it’s just the little things that make all the difference...

The Fosson family opened the hotel in 1996 and they’re still very much part of everyday life there. The first photo is of the family, taken last year, before Ubaldo sadly passed away. At Petit Tournalin, you’ll probably be welcomed by one of the sisters, Alessandra or Emanuela.

Alessandra lives just a few steps from reception with her husband and their eight-year-old son, Mathieu, so this really is a family-run hotel in every sense. If you’re lucky, you might find Mathieu playing the piano in the living area, or even joining some of our younger guests for an early dinner.

And then there’s the food 🤤

Arriving late after a delayed flight? They’ll make sure there’s something waiting for you, often local Aosta Valley cured meats and cheeses, even if the restaurant has already closed.

Members of the family are themselves coeliac and vegetarian too, so dietary requirements are genuinely understood. We’ve had some of our best food feedback from guests here, from homemade gluten-free dishes and creative vegetarian options to a gluten-free birthday cake made specially for one of our guests.

And for families with younger children, the hotel is easy and relaxed too. The living areas are welcoming, the recently refurbished rooms and restaurant feel fresh and comfortable, and people settle in very quickly.

It stands out for us because it’s warm, personal and run by people who genuinely care about hospitality and the people staying with them.

Which is very much our way of doing things too!

And judging by how many guests ask for it by name, we know we’re not the only ones who feel that way! ❤️

If you’ve stayed at Petit Tournalin before, what do you remember most?

“Mum, there’s a bit missing from my ski…” 🎿

Not the phone call you’re expecting, or wanting, from your 16-year-old when she’s up the mountain with her friends.

These were her own skis, brought over from the UK, and somehow the front binding was missing. She only realised when she got up the mountain and went to put them on, by which point Mum and Dad were already over in Gressoney – a good hour’s ski away - having their own ski day.

Now, you'd expect this sort of thing to derail everyone’s day 🤦‍♀️

Daughter needs to get back down, Mum and Dad have to cut short their skiing and head back to Champoluc, find and buy a replacement binding, get back on the slopes.

By the time all that’s happened, there might not be much of the day left for any of them.

But, luckily, this is just the sort of thing we’re here for!

Her parents gave us a call, the young star of our story came back on the gondolas to the Ski Champoluc boot room and we were able to lend her new skis, get everything set up properly with her own boots and send her straight back out to join her friends.

So, instead of a dash back from Gressoney, an emergency shopping trip and three people potentially losing a big chunk of their ski day, it became a fairly minor interruption and a story we can all laugh about afterwards. (Even mum and dad can laugh about it now!)

And that’s really what having a team here in Champoluc who live here year-round means. It’s not just about helping organise the holiday before you arrive, it’s about being around when something unexpected crops up, knowing who to call and doing what we can to sort it.

Has anything ever gone sideways for you on the mountain and needed sorting? We’d love to hear your story below 👇

We know there are a few good ones out there!

There’s something very special about Champoluc that isn’t just the skiing 🏔️

Although there’s plenty of that! ⛷️

It’s the winter light on the mountains, fresh snow glistening in the sun, long lunches that somehow become even longer, a glass of w**e on a terrace, quiet walks through the village or magical mountain and riverside paths.

It's the warm cafés, familiar faces and that lovely feeling of being tucked away in a real Italian mountain village while the snow falls outside.

And off peak, when the busiest weeks have passed and the weekend visitors have headed home, there’s even more space for all of it.

You can ski when you feel like skiing, linger when you feel like lingering and enjoy the village at that slower pace that makes winter here feel so special.

And because the Ski Champoluc team is here in resort, you can be as flexible as you like. We know what’s happening, where’s good to eat, what’s worth doing and how to help if your plans change, so you don’t need to organise every minute before you arrive.

If that sounds like your kind of Champoluc holiday, you can find more ideas for quieter weeks, slower days and ways to enjoy everything around the skiing at https://ski-champoluc.com/champoluc-ski-holidays-at-your-own-pace/

Look at those beautiful, peaceful slopes! 👀

Off-peak weeks really are perfect, especially for families.

One thing we hear quite a lot from families who come just outside the main school holiday weeks is how relaxed it all feels.

There’s more space on the slopes, fewer queues, more time to enjoy the mountain and often more chance to stop and chat to the people around you: instructors, hotel teams, restaurant staff and all the familiar faces who help make your holiday what it is.

You might have your pick of the mountain cafés for lunch, be able to chat a bit longer with your instructor at the end of ski school, or just enjoy the quieter runs together without feeling any need to rush anywhere.

It’s still the same Champoluc, just at a slightly gentler pace.

We run our Ski School in selected weeks either side of the main school holidays, so, if your dates are a little flexible, you can experience a different side of Champoluc and still have the same Ski Champoluc support around you.

We know that not everyone has flexibility around school dates, but some schools break up at slightly different times, and some families have a little wriggle room around the edges, especially with younger kids.

Have you ever checked whether your dates might give you that option?

If they do, send them over or use the booking form (link in bio) and we can provide a quote. ❤

We've had a friendly disagreement today... 😢

We've been discussing (read: "arguing" 😂) the best runs on Monterosa.⛷️

If you ask any amount of people in Champoluc for their favourite run you’ll rarely, if ever, get the same answer.

Jo’s perfect morning starts by avoiding the Goat (yes, she really dared say that out loud!), heading up La Mandria from Frachey, skiing across towards Gressoney and stopping for coffee at Ristoro Sitten.

Simon goes for Passo Salati, almost 3,000m up, for the huge views (you can see all the way to Milan on a clear day!), the long runs back towards Gressoney and the sight of the Lys Glacier with Castore and Lyskamm above. And if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, there are some incredible off-piste routes from up there too, including the famous Indren run.

Charlie keeps it simple: also choosing to start at La Mandria, straight down the red wall and into La Mandria restaurant for a burger. 😂

And Cille is prosecco skier; following the sun from the Goat, right the way to Alagna, never forgetting a cappuccino stop with breathtaking views at Passo Salati and a well-earned prosecco at Bruno's Terrace.

With such a large ski area and so many options for beginners, intermediate skiers and adventure-seeking advanced skiers alike, that’s probably why there’s no real answer to this one. And one person's answer might change by the day, depending on their vibe!

Sometimes it’s the view. Sometimes it’s the snow. Sometimes it’s the run the kids first properly got their confidence on. And sometimes it’s just the one that happens to finish at your favourite lunch stop!

Your turn: What’s your favourite run in Champoluc or across the Monterosa?

We’re expecting some disagreement. 👀

Did you know you can see both Mont Blanc and Matterhorn from the Monterosa massif?

Matterhorn is just up the road (in relative terms...), due north of Champoluc in the Swiss Alps, and Mont Blanc is a considerably further, to the west, but they're both visible on clear days from high altitude spots on the mountain.

From the top of La Mandria above Frachey, you can pick out the Matterhorn on a clear day. But head higher across the Monterosa, around Bettaforca and Passo Salati (at nearly 3,000m), and the panorama opens up even further and, on a really clear day, you can see both the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.

There's a lot you might not know about Champoluc and Monterosa ski area!

(Maybe you should come visit this winter and discover more! 😉)
