Standing beneath giants.
This is De Noord in Schiedam — at 33.3 meters (109ft) the tallest traditional windmill on the planet. Built in 1803, not to fight water, but to feed an industry: it ground malted grain for Schiedam’s famous jenever, Dutch gin.
In the 18th and 19th century Schiedam had over 20 of these sky-scrapers. They had to be this tall to catch wind above the warehouses and distilleries. Today only five remain, and De Noord still dominates the skyline with its 26.6-meter sails.
Now it houses a restaurant, but the brick tower, the wooden gears, the rotating cap — it’s all original Dutch engineering at its most stubborn and beautiful.
Second one peeking behind it? That’s De Walvisch. Two centuries of work, still standing watch over the canal.
Some countries build cathedrals to reach heaven. The Dutch built windmills.
Have you ever been inside one?

Capturing a piece of Dutch history... 🌾✨Standing proud since 1748, windmill De Korenbloem in Oude-Tonge is a true testament to timeless Dutch craftsmanship. This historic brick beauty spent over two centuries grinding grain, surviving fierce North Sea storms, and remaining a beacon of the local landscape.Fun fact: inside its structure hides a piece of maritime history—an old ship’s mast was repurposed here as part of the windmill’s steering mechanism! ⛵️💨There is nothing quite like watching these massive sails catch the wind. A perfect slice of traditional Holland. 🇳🇱👇
