Watch a special message from our Dy COO, Anil Narayanan. In this video, Anil explains that the situation at VCT is strong and reliable, how VCT is ready to move more cargo during COVID-19 pandemic.

VCT is the container terminal of J M BAXI GROUP in Visakhapatnam. At this juncture, Visakha Container Terminal has been operating by having a business continuity plan duly taking into consideration safety as the utmost priority. Methods of social distancing is followed with minimum manning ensuring 24x7 operation duly meeting customers’ requirement. Vessels are turned around without any impact on productivity as well as yard operation during the lockdown period.

Our employees are provided with the required Personal Protective Equipment, Sanitizers etc. Terminal premises and the offices are quarantined on a periodic basis. Personnel arriving in the terminal are thermally screened at the entry as a precautionary measure. Greater use of digital technology has been a top priority at VCT which has proved to be constructive during COVID-19.

The major challenge we all faced initially is the non-availability of trucks and labour due to which the cargo movement was affected. We have proactively taken up these issues with the concerned authorities and trade. With concerted efforts, truck movement between terminal and CFSs are normalised now. Slow cargo evacuation in the CFSs remains the major concern. It is hence essential to all of us including stakeholders work together in these challenging times to ease out cargo movement. We are in constant contact with our customers and are providing the necessary assistance whenever required.

My best wishes to you and to your family: stay safe and stay healthy.

Visakha Container Terminal’s Scale-up to Improve VPT

Visakhapatnam Port Trust is improving its cargo handling capacity from 63.70 million tonnes to 70 million tonnes which is a major step in regaining its second rank it once held. “Environment protection, mainly by restricting open handling of coal and iron ore, would be a focus area. The port is taking steps to have covered stockyards,” according to Mr Rama Mohan Rao, the new chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

Efficiency parameters would be improved to ensure faster evacuation of cargo. With a huge hinterland spread over several States, the VPT would offer an attractive environment to handle cargo exports and imports.

VCT – Emerging Transshipment Hub on the East Coast of India

Visakha Container Terminal (VCT) handled over 0.45 million TEUs during FY 18-19 and is on the verge of crossing the 0.5 million TEUs mark in FY 19-20, thanks to a steady growth in traffic to/from adjoining areas at a progressive rate of 16% complemented with inbound and outbound rail movement from/to the hinterland and also Transhipment. VCT has the capability to handle large volumes of container transhipment traffic as compared to all the other ports on the East Coast because of its locational advantages, depth of 16.5m, weekly main line and feeder service calls.
Keeping this growth in view, Visakhapatnam port was identified in the National Maritime Agenda 2010:2020 to be developed as a transhipment hub. The Transhipment volumes at VCT grew at a remarkable rate of 148% in FY 19 over FY 18. With the continuous growth in transhipment volumes and with the patronage from various lines like RCL, WHL, Evergreen Shipping, Samudera, Global Feeders and NVOCCs, the growth rate in FY 20, as compared to FY 19, for Apr – Aug is at 188% and is expected to rise further – with increased participation from other lines who are actively exploring VCT to be their partners in progress.
