The Basilica of Our Lady of Velankanni is a famous pilgrimage site, standing as a beacon of Christian faith on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.

Known as the Mother of Health, this holy place was formed through a combination of history and traditional beliefs.

In the 16th century, when Portuguese sailors, caught in a severe storm in the Bay of Bengal, built a small chapel here as a token of gratitude for their salvation by calling on the Mother, Velankanni entered official history.

At that time, it is believed that the Mother appeared here to a sick milkman boy, and that the boy miraculously recovered with the blessings of the Mother. This belief elevated Mother Velankanni to the glory of the Mother of Health.

Over time, the chapel grew into a beautiful basilica. One of the few basilicas in India located on the seashore, Velankanni is a model of sculptural beauty in the European Gothic style, with tall white towers.

In the historical city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, there is a grand temple that seems to touch the sky... the world-famous Brihadeeswara Temple.

Built in the 11th century by the Chola king, Rajaraja Chola I, this grand temple is one of the greatest achievements of Indian architecture. Brihadeeswara Temple, formerly known as Rajarajeshwaram, is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built entirely of granite in Thanjavur, the capital of the Chola dynasty, this temple is a marvel of temple architecture.

The 216-foot-tall Vimana Gopuram and the eighty-ton monolith spire are engineering marvels that demonstrate the amazing power of human intelligence and the willpower of the human mind at that time. The gigantic Shivalinga in the sanctum sanctorum is one of the largest Shivalingas in India. The gigantic Mahanandi, carved out of a single stone, that stands tall in the temple courtyard, is a symbol of Dharma and devotion to Shiva.

The Brihadeeswarar Temple was not only a place of worship — it was also a center of administration and art.

In 1987, UNESCO declared this temple a World Heritage Site.

Despite the passage of a thousand years of history, this great temple still stands as a great wonder.

In Arasikere, Hassan district of Karnataka, the sculptural and the architectural splendor of the Hoysala period still stands peacefully. That is the Hoysala Ishwar Temple.

This beautiful temple was built as a center of worship for Lord Shiva during a historical period in the 13th century, during the reign of Narasimha II of the Hoysala Empire.

Built using soapstone, this temple presents the meticulousness and technical excellence of Hoysala sculpture as a comprehensive stone work.

The sixteen-pointed, star-shaped mandapam is the most striking feature of this temple. The circular circumambulation path and the five-tiered shikhara illustrate the uniqueness of the Hoysala style of sculpture.

The sculptures carved on the temple walls present the concepts of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism on the same stage. This clearly reflects the diversity and beauty of Hoysala sculpture.

This stone monument, which has survived the journey of centuries and has even turned the touch of time into beauty, today stands as a heritage monument of national importance, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The temple of Ishwar at Arasikere,
the presence of Lord Shiva, recorded in stone, is an eternal testimony to Hoysala history.

Inside the historic Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu, there is a Vijayanagara architectural marvel that defies time... the Jalakandeshwara Temple. The unique beauty of Vijayanagara architecture still exists here with the same charm.

The main attraction of this great temple is the Kalyana Mandapa, built for the ceremonial divine wedding ceremonies, each pillar of which tells a story.

Built in the 16th century, during the reign of Sadashivarayana of the Vijayanagara Empire, this structure is an open mandapa with beautifully carved pillars at the front. The upper tier of the mandapa includes a unique Kurma-shaped platform that was used for the marriage of Shiva and Parvati.

The sculptures on the pillars here are wonders carved out of a single stone! Yaalis on horseback, dancers, and mythological characters. It feels as if the chisels and hammers of the sculptors have written poetry on stone, when you see these sights.

This is not just a temple structure. It is a great historical monument that conveys the cultural glory of the Vijayanagara Empire and the immortal talent of sculpture to the present generation.

The ancient Uliyannoor Mahadev Temple, a marvel of temple architecture, is located on the Uliyannoor Island, where the Periyar River splits into two.

This sacred sanctuary, which holds a special place among the 108 Shiva temples established by Parashurama, holds equal importance due to the presence of the goddess.

The huge Vattasree Kovil here bears witness to the mastery of the carving skills of Perumthachan, the legendary sculptor of the Panthirukulam clan.

This temple has an anti-obstruction style, with Lord Shiva facing east and Goddess Parvati facing west within the same sanctum.

The Namaskar Mandapam, beautifully constructed to precise dimensions, and the spacious Balikalpura, evoke the greatness of Kerala temple construction.

This grand temple, where legend and history intertwine with the waves of the Periyar, is a favorite of archeologists and devotees alike.

Mridangasaileshwari was the deity of the Kottayam and Purali kings of northern Kerala, including the Kerala Lion Veerapazhassi Raja. The famous Mridangasaileshwari temple is located in the village of Muzhukkunnu in Kannur district. The ancestors of the Kottayam dynasty were known as the Purali kings. The Purali land includes the present-day areas of Muzhukkunnu, Pazhassi, and Puralimala.

There is an ancient legend that a Mizhavu fell in this area from the divine world. The place where the Mizhavu fell is called Mizhavu Kunnu, and the goddess who appeared as a swayambhu on a rock in the shape of a Mridanga is called Mridangasaileshwari. It is also believed that this is one of the 108 Durga temples established by Parashurama.

Inspired by the Ramanatam of Kottarakkara Thampuran, Kottayam Thampuran composed Kathakali in the presence of this temple. The Vandana Shloka in Kathakali is in praise of the goddess who is worshipped in this temple.

It is said that while designing the costumes for Kathakali, Thampuran was confused about how a woman should be dressed. The goddess appeared in the temple pond and gave him the vision of the woman in Kathakali.

This divine temple, where spirituality, art and history merge together, is a precious part of the heritage of North Kerala.

A divine journey from Tirupati to Tirumala.

The holy city of Tirupati is located at the foothills of the Seshachala mountain range in Andhra Pradesh. From here, the pilgrimage to see Lord Venkateswara begins.

Traditionally, devotees first pay homage to the elder brother of Lord Venkateswara, Sri Govindarajaswamy Temple. Then, they pay homage to Padmavati Amma in Tiruchanur, the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and the wife of Lord Venkateswara.

After paying homage to Padmavati, one ascends to Tirumala and pays homage to Lord Venkateswara Swamy while enjoying the views of the eastern Ghats and chanting names like Srinivasa and Govinda.

The divine shrines of Tirupati and Tirumala have attained their present glory through the dedication of various dynasties over the centuries.

Starting from the ancient rulers like the Pallavas and Cholas, and up to the golden age of the Vijayanagara Empire, royal patronage and a series of donations made these temples the spiritual crown jewels of India.

The Tirumala Mahahundi, where devotees accept offerings to pay off the debt that Srinivasan had taken from Kubera for his marriage to Padmavati, reveals the intensity of Venkateswara devotion and faith.

The head-shaving ritual, which is meant to reduce ego, and the divine prasad, Tirupati Laddu, make this journey special.

First, prayers in the presence of Govindaraja,
then the blessings of Padmavati Amma, and finally, the darshan of Venkateswara.

This is the divine darshan path from Tirupati to Tirumala.

This divine journey, where every step becomes a penance and every vision becomes a blessing, is the devotion of devotees to God.
