39. Mysuru, Karnataka.

Mysuru isn't just palaces and postcards. ✨

Behind the Amba Vilas glow lies a district stitched together by silk threads, jasmine fields and centuries of handwork most travellers never slow down for.

Here, silk becomes tradition. Jasmine fills the markets. Sandalwood and rosewood turn into art under a craftsman's hands. And food — from Mysore Pak to filter coffee — tells its own quiet story of home.

Swipe through to discover the Mysuru beyond the famous 🏰🌸.

📍 Best time to visit: Oct–Feb
🧵 What to explore: Silk weaving, rosewood inlay, Ganjifa painting, Devaraja Market, Nanjangud rasabale & more

Which craft surprised you the most — silk, sandalwood, or jasmine? Tell us below 👇

2. Twin Towers of Raila, Himachal Pradesh.
Someone told them twin towers don't exist in remote Himalayan villages.
They were driving past Raila on their way somewhere else.

Then they looked up.

The Dhaliara Kothi—the Twin Towers of Raila—rise from a small hillock in Raila village, Sainj Valley, Kullu district. Two ancient watchtowers, built by the erstwhile king of Raila, standing centuries after the kingdom that built them disappeared into history.

Visible from the road before you even reach the village. Impossible to miss. Impossible to explain until you're standing at their base.

No cement. No mortar. No metal nails.

The towers are built entirely in the Kathkuni style—the traditional earthquake-resistant construction technique of the western Himalayas. Alternating layers of deodar wood and precisely fitted local stone, interlocked without any binding material. Similar in style to the more famous Chehni Kothi in Tirthan Valley—but in this remote corner of Sainj, almost entirely undiscovered.

The windows are narrow on the outside and wide on the inside—a deliberate defensive design that allowed guards to sit comfortably within, with a commanding view of the valley approaches, while presenting the smallest possible target to anyone below.

The valley they were watching over was no ordinary one. Sainj Valley's trade routes connected the Kullu region to the high Himalayan passes—a corridor worth protecting.

One of the towers still houses a local deity—locked to outsiders except during special religious occasions. The community that built these towers centuries ago still cares for what they left behind.

The towers sit within the buffer zone of the Great Himalayan National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—surrounded by pine and deodar forests that stretch to snow-capped ridges in every direction.

From the base of the hillock, the views are extraordinary. A 360-degree panorama of the Sainj Valley, the forest canopy, and the high Himalayan peaks beyond.

And just 20-30 minutes uphill through deodar forest—Bhatkanda Meadows. A vast stretch of open green that delivers one of the most breathtaking sunset views in the entire Kullu region.

Leave your connectivity expectations at the highway. Every carrier goes offline in Raila. The last bus back to Sainj runs in the afternoon—ask locals for exact timings and plan accordingly.

What you find when you get here more than compensates for everything you leave behind to reach it.

Some towers were built to watch over valleys. Centuries later—they still do.

1. Devi Kothi Temple, Himachal Pradesh.
William Dalrymple, one of India's most celebrated historians—called it the Sistine Chapel of Pahari art.

It sits in a remote Himalayan valley that most Indians have never heard of.
And part of it has already been damaged—quietly, without headlines.

The Devi Kothi Temple stands in Devi Kothi village, deep in the Churah Valley of Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh — approximately 110 km from Chamba town, at the base of the formidable Sach Pass. The mountainous terrain keeps the area covered in snow for six months every year.

It was built in 1754 CE by Raja Umed Singh of Chamba — an ardent follower of the Shakti cult who commissioned the temple on the fulfilment of a deeply personal royal wish. It is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda — the fierce, battle-ready manifestation of Goddess Durga—locally worshipped as Bairwali Chamunda, believed to be the youngest of seven divine goddess sisters, spread across sacred sites from Kolkata to Bharmour.

Step inside and the walls speak.

Miniature-style frescoes cover every surface—their style is directly traceable to Laharu, the master painter who defined Chamba court painting during Raja Umed Singh's reign. His Krishna paintings, now preserved in the Bhuri Singh Museum in Chamba, serve as the direct artistic ancestor of the murals on the eastern wall of this temple.

The Devi Mahatmya unfolds across the walls — Chamunda destroying demon armies, her battle scenes rendered in vivid, intricate detail that took painters months to complete. The Krishna cycle on the eastern wall moves from his birth through his youth and conquest of Mathura — an entire epic told in miniature brushstrokes on a Himalayan temple wall.

And then there are the wooden carvings.

The ceiling and pillars carry something extraordinary—a fusion that reveals the cultural crossroads this Himalayan valley once occupied. Celestial figures carved in indigenous Pahari style sit alongside Mughal-inspired costumes. Winged Persian fairies—peri—appear beside eight-pointed Iranian star motifs. Sun disc symbols called shamsa echo across the ceiling.

A remote Himalayan temple carrying the artistic DNA of Persia, the Mughal court, and the Chamba hills simultaneously.

Which is exactly why what happened next is heartbreaking.

The local temple committee recently undertook a renovation effort. In the process, some of the irreplaceable 270-year-old frescoes were damaged.

No national headlines. No emergency preservation response. Just a quiet, irreversible loss in a valley most people will never visit.

The temple still stands. The remaining murals still breathe with extraordinary artistic life. Every April, the Baisakhi festival brings thousands of pilgrims when the deity processes in a month-long traditional procession to meet Chamunda Devi in Chamba city—one of the most vibrant living traditions connected to this shrine.
But the urgency of visiting—of witnessing what remains before more is lost—has never been greater.

In a Himalayan valley near the Sach Pass, one of India's greatest artistic treasures is slowly disappearing. The world is only just beginning to notice. 🏔️

Massive stalactites and stalagmites glowing under colored light. Winding underground passages carved entirely by nature. This is one of India's most surreal underground landscapes. ✨
