Mawlynnong – Meghalaya’s Tropical Getaway

One of the highlights to any Meghalaya trip would be Mawlynnong, a tropical hamlet just 80 kms from the state capital, Shillong, which has now become one of the most famous destinations in the entire North-East region.

Mawlynnong’s fame has been rather simplified as ‘Asia’s Cleanest Village’, a distinction that the village received many years ago. A truer description of Mawlynnong would be a beautiful and lush getaway, sprinkled with diverse vegetation, pristine streams, waterfalls, rock formations and of course – the ‘living root’ bridge – one of the most unique blends of nature and engineering you will come across in the world. The community of Mawlynnong village has maintained the village premises and gardens in the most impeccable manner, and the throng of crowds does not distract the mission to keep the place clean. A visit to Mawlynnong also offers a glimpse into the ways of the Khasis here, distinctive in many ways from the ones who stay in the highlands.

Attractions of Mawlynnong

The Anglican Church is a regal stone and wood building that stands out in the village of Mawlynnong and is more than a century old. Built around the principles of Victorian architecture – the church is the social and spiritual centrepiece of the communities around it, and is nestled amidst palms and fruit trees, its stony paths lined with flowering bushes.

There are many root bridges in Meghalaya, but the poster child of this eclectic collection is the Living Root Bridge of Nohwet village, a short walk from Mawlynnong. The bridge is a wide and long marvel of natural engineering, arching over the rigorous river currents. The root bridges of Meghalaya are made by manipulating the roots of the rubber fig tree, either with or without scaffolding, to grow horizontally over generations until it is strong and wide enough to support human weight. Getting to the Living Root Bridge involves a pleasant trail through the village and surrounding plantations. You can cross the bridge and if you fancy a dip, the chilled rushing waters of the river are a pleasure to step into.

Are you ready to challenge your fear of dizzying heights? In Mawlynnong, you can climb up a couple of tree houses and get expansive views of the surrounding landscapes – on clear days, the plains of Sylhet look like they are just a sprint away. This is a great spot for photography too, and you can capture panoramic portraits of the village with the defining structure of the church on the foreground.

Meghalaya is a land of contrasts, where tall pines sway in cool winds on the highlands, while just a short hike down the slopes; one comes across tropical paradises with cascading rapids and lush greenery. Interacting with the Khasis of Meghalaya is also a fascinating cultural exercise, as the dialects and the architecture changes as promptly as the terrain. The southern part of Meghalaya is a far cry from the urban setting of Shillong and spending time here is an ideal way of getting deeper insight into the communities that call this state home.

For the adventurous and curious traveller, Mawlynnong has much to offer, from the beauty of the surroundings to the unique harmony between man and nature, manifested in the Living Root Bridge. There are many home stays in Mawlynnong, which can be booked in advance, along with a range of cabs – depending on group size. The journey from Shillong takes a little more than 2 hours, an early start is recommended.
