It’s a matter of historical irony that one of India’s newest States sits on the oldest rocks in the Indian Subcontinent. There are the Archaean granites and gneisses, on which shallow marine sediments (sandstone, shale, limestone, and volcanic ash) sit uncomfortably. Here we have the Gondwana formations bearing coal deposits dating back 250-300 million years , as also the 65 million year old Deccan Trap, formed from volcanic basalt flows capped with laterite. Endowed with forests, rich mineral deposits and precious stones, this land held an irresistible allure to a succession of rulers. 44% of Chhattisgarh is under forests consisting of teak, sal, bija, saja, dhawra, mahua and tendu. Chhattisgarh is a rich State from the Tourism point of view. The beauty of nature, the lifestyle of tribals, the multifarious rock paintings of Singhanpur and Kabra Pahar, the hillocks of Maikal, Keshkal, Indravati and Kanger Valley National Park, the rock shelter of primitive society, the natural caves, Chitrakote and Teerathgarh waterfalls, the flowing rivers throughout the year, the lush green forests, the unique tradition and culture of tribals are some of the distinguished attractions. Bhoramdeo Temple, famous pilgrimage centers of Rajim, Sirpur, Devbaloda, Tala, Malhar, Ratanpur, Turturia, Sheorinarayan and Champaran, National Parks, famous Kutumsar Caves with blind fishes and the ancient amphitheatre of Ramgarh excites the tourists. Champaran - the birth place of Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya, the founder of Vaishnav Sect is also a famous tourist destination. Chhattisgarh State is blessed with many locations of great natural beauty, comprising of rivers, lush green forests, waterfalls, mountains, etc.The State has numerous historical and heritage sites which are unexplored.The State is also rich in art and culture with unique handicrafts and handlooms. The State has colourful fairs and festivals which are held annually The State is centrally located, bordered by six neighboring States. Since the global trend towards exotic destinations is increasing, Chhattisgarh can tap the potential for exploiting the unexplored locations. Multiple circuits and packages can be developed such as tribal tourism, leisure tourism, religious tourism, eco tourism, etc. Being centrally located in India, a large catchment of Domestic Tourists could be tapped. Competition from other States of India, which aggressively promote their own tourist destinations. Security threats due to the poor law and order situation prevailing in a few potential tourism locations in certain pockets of the State
