🕊️ Shanti Stupa – A Symbol of Peace Built with Local Hands
The beautiful Shanti Stupa in Leh, Ladakh is not just a tourist attraction — it is a symbol of peace, unity, and collaboration between nations and communities.
🕘 How It Was Built
Shanti Stupa was built in 1991 as part of the global Peace Pagoda mission initiated by Japanese Buddhist monk Nichidatsu Fujii, founder of the Nipponzan Myohoji order. The project aimed to promote world peace and strengthen Indo-Japanese friendship.
The construction was led by Japanese monks along with Ladakhi Buddhists, but what makes it truly special is the strong support of local people of Leh.
👷 Role of Local Ladakhi People
The stupa is located on Changspa hill, at a high altitude.
During the late 1980s, there were limited road facilities and heavy machinery was not easily available.
Many local villagers voluntarily helped in carrying construction materials, stones, cement, and water up the hill.
Local artisans and workers contributed their skills in traditional Ladakhi architecture and finishing work.
The community supported the monks with food, labor, and logistics throughout the project.
It became a community-driven effort, reflecting Ladakh’s spirit of cooperation and devotion.
Inauguration
The Shanti Stupa was inaugurated by Tenzin Gyatso, making it even more spiritually significant.
Today, Shanti Stupa stands as:
