Situated on the banks of the River Indus in Phey village, near Leh in the Indian Himalayas, SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) is an innovative, eco-friendly educational campus founded to transform how learning happens in this remote region of Ladakh.
What SECMOL is and why it matters
Founded in 1988 by Sonam Wangchuk, SECMOL was created as an alternative to the conventional school system that left many Ladakhi students struggling, particularly because of cultural mismatches and high failure rates. Rather than focusing only on textbooks and exams, the school emphasizes learning by doing — students participate in real life activities like farming, building, animal care, and sustainable living, alongside academics. The campus uses passive solar architecture and runs largely on renewable energy, making it comfortable even in harsh winters without fossil fuels. It’s home to around 70 students who live, study, work and help self-govern the campus under democratic principles.
Sonam Wangchuk — the real inspiration behind ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’
Sonam Wangchuk is a Ladakhi engineer, innovator and education reformer whose life and work inspired the beloved fictional character Phunsukh Wangdu in the Bollywood movie 3 Idiots. Wangchuk has worked not only on education reform but also on climate-responsive innovations like solar-heated buildings and ice stupas — artificial glacier mounds that store winter water for summer irrigation. He has received international recognition including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his contributions to education and sustainable development.
Reel vs Real — 3 Idiots and SECMOL

While the movie’s school is fictionalized and dramatized for entertainment, the real SECMOL campus in Ladakh is a genuine alternative learning center rooted in the same spirit of experiential, student-centered edu
