Railway growth needs industry to scale with it.

Eastern India’s railway network is entering an important phase of expansion, creating a parallel requirement for the industrial ecosystem to build ahead of demand.

At the Bengal Railway Summit this week, our MD, Vivek Lohia, spoke about the capabilities needed to support the next phase of railway growth, and the role of industry, technology partners and MSMEs in building them.

As the network expands, products and manufacturing capacity must scale with it, while continuing to deliver on quality, safety and reliability. The pace of infrastructure growth also creates an opportunity for industry to invest, innovate and strengthen capabilities ahead of future demand.

For Bengal, with its deep railway and industrial heritage and a strong MSME ecosystem, this is an important opportunity to contribute to the next phase of India’s railway growth.

For years, wagon design evolved alongside the growth of India’s rail network, creating a strong foundation for freight movement.

Today, industries are more diverse, supply chains are more specialised, and freight operators increasingly need rolling stock designed around the characteristics of the cargo they move.

Recognising this shift, Indian Railways has introduced a new wagon design framework that encourages industry-led development of application-specific wagons, while retaining RDSO’s rigorous technical evaluation and safety approval process. The framework enables solutions tailored to changing freight requirements without compromising safety or interoperability.

This marks an important shift in rolling stock development. By bringing together the engineering expertise of manufacturers, the operational insights of freight users, and the regulatory oversight of Indian Railways and RDSO, it creates greater scope for innovation aligned with real-world logistics requirements.

As part of the Government of India’s campaign, commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram, we are proud to join the national celebration.

Through a handwritten note, our Chairman Emeritus, Shri M. L. Lohia, reflects on a lifetime of witnessing India’s journey from the years before Independence to the India we see today, and shares a simple message with the next generation: freedom is a responsibility we must value, protect and carry forward.

We are honoured to share his words as part of this national celebration.

Jai Hind.

Since then, the role of the freight wagon has evolved with the changing needs of the economy, from moving cargo safely and reliably to supporting increasingly efficient and diverse freight movement.

Today's supply chains move everything from steel coils and automobiles to containers, cement, fly ash, aggregates and specialised bulk commodities. Each comes with its own loading patterns, handling requirements and operational nuances.

As freight requirements became more diverse, traditional wagons became inadequate. The industry steadily moved towards purpose-built designs, engineered around the specific needs of different commodities, improving payload utilisation, loading efficiency, turnaround time and overall logistics performance.

This shift is reflected in Indian Railways' rolling stock. Over the years, purpose-built wagon designs have been introduced for a wide range of freight applications, each optimised for specific commodity and operational needs.
The next phase goes beyond structural design.

Wagons are becoming connected, data-enabled assets, with digital monitoring and onboard diagnostics enabling predictive, condition-based maintenance. RDSO’s Smart Wagon initiative reflects this shift, with the potential to improve fleet availability and reduce unplanned downtime.

A moment of pride, a symbol of unity, the Tiranga that brings us together. 🇮🇳

As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, our corporate office came together to celebrate the flag that unites us and the spirit of India that inspires us.

The flag hoisting was followed by moments of celebration, as our teams came together to mark Independence Day with pride and enthusiasm.

This year’s campaign, dedicated to 150 Years of Vande Mataram, is a reminder of what the Tiranga represents to each of us: our shared pride in the nation and our collective responsibility towards its future.

At Jupiter Wagons, we are proud to celebrate the spirit of India and the values that continue to bring us together.

Watch our MD, Vivek Lohia, in conversation with NDTV Profit anchors Hiral Dadia and Alex Mathew as he discusses Jupiter Wagons' recent wagon order wins from the private sector, including a second order from the JSW Group in six weeks, and the recent win of 100 MW/400 MWh BESS projects in West Bengal. Together, these developments reflect the growing opportunities across Jupiter Wagons' rail and energy businesses.

He talks about the company's shift beyond railways and mobility into the energy transition space, and how these projects will run on a 15-year Build-Own-Operate model through Jupiter Electric Mobility, giving the group long-term revenue visibility that stretches well past a single order cycle. He frames the diversification as a deliberate extension of manufacturing capabilities built over years in rail and mobility, part of a broader plan to de-risk the business away from any single segment.

The conversation also touches on the growing opportunity in the wheelset business, plans to scale manufacturing capacity, and how international partnerships position India to compete for export orders in a segment long dominated by a handful of global suppliers.

Private-sector trust in our manufacturing capacity keeps translating into orders.

Growing private-sector participation in rail freight is creating demand for specialised and high-capacity wagons, and the latest wins reflect just how much that confidence is building.

JSW Port Logistics Private Limited and Orissa Alloy Steel Private Limited have placed orders with us valued at Rs. 211.27 crore.

The JSW Group has placed its second order with us in six weeks for 7 BOSM rakes, comprising 329 wagons, taking cumulative order intake from the group to approximately Rs. 270 crore since June 2026.

Separately, Orissa Alloy Steel Private Limited has placed an order for 3 BOSM rakes, comprising 150 wagons, under the LSFTO Scheme, valued at Rs. 64.16 crore.

Beyond the order value, these wins point to a broader shift in India's freight ecosystem, with private-sector participation in wagon ownership creating demand for specialised, high-capacity rolling stock. For Jupiter Wagons, this reinforces our role as a manufacturing partner to customers investing in more efficient freight logistics.

A new milestone in the energy storage journey: two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects have been secured in West Bengal, with a combined capacity of 100 MW/400 MWh. The projects are located at Jeerat and Kharagpur.

These will be executed and operated through JEM, the subsidiary driving this expansion, and involve supply and commissioning of an approximately INR 400 crore BESS project. Operations will run under a 15 year BOO model with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL).

With these wins, Jupiter Electric Mobility BESS order book, including Commercial & Industrial (C&I) capacity, now stands at approx. 500 MWh, valued at over INR 500 crore. The target ahead: a BESS order book of approximately INR 1,000 crore by FY27.
