India Monitoring Shipping Activity in the Gulf Region

Amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, the Government of India is closely monitoring Indian-flagged vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz. Authorities have intensified surveillance and established continuous communication with shipping operators to ensure the safety of crews and cargo.

Currently, several Indian merchant ships carrying crude oil, liquefied natural gas, and other essential goods are navigating these strategic waterways. The Ministry of Ports and Shipping has advised all shipping companies to strictly follow safety protocols and provide regular updates on vessel movements.

India is taking all precautionary measures to safeguard its maritime assets while ensuring that global trade routes remain stable and uninterrupted.

New Customs & Port Measures to Mitigate Middle East Maritime Disruptions

The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways have introduced emergency SOPs and circulars to support exporters facing route closures in the Middle East.

Key Regulatory Relief:

Fee Waivers: Customs authorities will waive fees for amending or cancelling export documents (Shipping Bills) when necessitated by force majeure events like vessel cancellations or port disruptions.

Simplified Returns: Cargo returning from international waters without reaching its destination can now be offloaded without filing a new Bill of Entry, provided seals are intact.

Expedited Handling: Major ports have been directed to appoint 24/7 Nodal Officers to resolve issues within 24 to 72 hours.

Priority Storage: Ports may now permit the storage of Middle East-bound cargo as transshipment cargo and provide priority handling for perishables.

These relaxations under Section 143AA of the Customs Act are currently set for a 15-day window from the date of issuance.
