Kalasan Nursery Farm: The Story Behind India’s Clean Plant Vision
📅 The Real Timeline: February 2020 — Before COVID
We were so privileged that when National Seeds Corporation (NSC) approached Vikram Rawat of Kalasan Nursery Farm — and invited by the then Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NSC, Shri Vinod Kumar Gaur, to prepare a detailed proposal for establishing a Clean Plant Centre (CPC) and Post-Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility in India. We submitted this proposal (with a request to establish this either in Himachal or in Uttarakhand) to NSC in February 2020 — before the pandemic disrupted everything. We were really honored to have this invitation and to become part of it.
So, we were not followers of a 2024 idea. Like pioneers in modern Apple farming, We were also pioneers of a 2020 vision for CPC.
What We Proposed Back Then: -
A state-of-the-art Clean Plant Centre to produce virus-free, true-to-type elite mother stock.
Post-Entry Quarantine (PEQ) protocols for imported genetic material.
A traceable, national supply chain of certified rootstocks and scions for Indian nurseries.
Our Operational Foundation Today
Elite foundation material with virus-free certified rootstocks sourced from Fairplant, Netherlands.
Strict mother-tree purity protocols in our budwood blocks.
Readiness validated through virus testing audits by joint technical teams from ICAR-CITH Jammu and NHB.
The Road Ahead
Kalasan Nursery Farm is now moving towards an in-house, next-generation clean plant centre with molecular diagnostics and DNA fingerprinting — ensuring every plant we supply is healthy, true-to-type, and orchard-ready.
