For the past 20 years, Kailashgiri (48), a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, has been the ideal son, a real life ‘Sharvan’, carrying his 92 years old blind mother on his shoulders in a ‘kavadi’ and walking 36,582 kms across the country, fulfilling her wish to travel on foot to the ‘char dhams’.
AGRA: For the past 20 years, Kailashgiri (48), a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, has been the ideal son, a real life 'Sharvan', carrying his 92 years old blind mother on his shoulders in a 'kavadi' and walking 36,582 kms across the country, fulfilling her wish to travel on foot to the 'char dhams'.
The pilgrimage, which started in Feb 1996 from his hometown, entered its last leg, as Kailash and his mother, Kirti Devi, set foot on Agra on Tuesday while on their way to Mathura's famed Banke Bihari temple. He was 28 years old when he took the vow to fulfill his mother's wish and two decades and over 36,000 kms later, he is all set to complete his mission.
Though many people are surprised seeing this 21st century 'sharvan' fulfilling his mother's wish in this manner, his story and grit can move the hardest of men. "I was 14 when I fell from a tree and would have surely died if my mother hadn't taken care of me and prayed day in and day out. It was then she had taken vow (mannat) that she would visit char dhams and I consider it my duty to fulfill it", he told TOI.
