A border district in Jammu just made national heritage history. Most of India doesn't know.

Rajouri's Bhairav Yatra is now officially on India's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Only the second tradition from J&K to receive this.

The story starts with a famine. Fields failed. A mysterious figure appeared with one instruction: organise a Bhairo Jhanki every year before Holi. Prosperity will return.

It did. The procession has never stopped since.

Every year, one devotee becomes Bhairo Bawa. Body painted black. Ritual iron tongs in hand. Walking through Rajouri's streets not as a man, but as the deity himself. One black tilak. One tap of the chimta. One blessing for the entire year.

And everyone walks together. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh. The Bhairav Yatra is Rajouri's living proof that a border district can be a symbol of communal harmony.

Rajouri has long been known as a border district. After this, it should be known as a heritage district.

Every year, crores of devotees pass through Jammu on their way to Mata Vaishno Devi. Most of them never know this temple exists.

Kala Dera. Two ancient Shiva temples in Manwal, built from black stone. East-facing. Elevated on a high platform. Four fluted columns inside, twelve pilasters supporting the mandap. A Doric order pillar with a crocodile carved into its capital. A Sharda script inscription on the wall that nobody can read anymore.

This is not a temple in ruins. It is a temple that was deliberately destroyed. The headless Nandi at the entrance tells you that. The broken Amalaka capstone tells you that. The defaced inscription tells you that.

What survived the invasion is still standing. And it is still worth seeing.

Do you know what Dhabka work is?

This man has been doing Dhabka embroidery by hand for 45 years. His entire family does it too.

Dhabka is a traditional embroidery from Bhaderwah, Jammu. Done on velvet, with copper, gold and silver threads, every motif is placed by hand. The peacock feather you see on that fabric was not printed. It was stitched in, one thread at a time.

His father did this work before him. Today his wife and children do it alongside him. This is not a craft that was taught in a workshop. It is a craft that was passed down at home, across generations, without interruption.

Most people in India have never heard of Dhabka work. That is exactly why we are here.

Of the five temples in the Manwal Group, only one is still alive.

This is Devi Bhagwati Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali. While the other four temples stand in ruins, this one still holds its sanctity, still receives prayers, and still breathes.

The architecture tells its own story. A square mandap supported by four pillars, two fluted columns and two round ones. Outside, the ruins of what once was a complete complex. Inside, a garbha griha that has outlasted centuries.

Jammu has a Vaishno Devi that the world knows. It also has temples like this one that the world has never heard of.

Everyone knows Sawan belongs to Shiva. Nobody asks who the Tuesdays belong to.

Tuesdays go to Parvati, in her form as Mangla Gauri.

She is made of turmeric and does not last the week. Built on Tuesday morning, dressed, given sixteen of everything, and immersed by Wednesday. Made, honoured, released. For five years.

The sixteen runs through everything. Sixteen laddoos, sixteen wicks, sixteen adornments of a married woman. And sixteen was the age the boy in the Katha was supposed to die. He survived because his mother-in-law had kept Mangla Gauri for years. Protection travelled sideways, through the women.

North India Tuesdays: 4, 11, 18, 25 August.
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, South India: 18, 25 August, 1, 8 September.

Today is the North's third and the Deccan's first.

India doesn't have one version of anything. That's the best thing about it.

In the old houses of the Jammu hills, even the broom has a name.

The flooring of Duggar vernacular architecture is cleaned with a broom called Boar. Trimdiali Boar. Made from local grass that is harvested, dried, and shaped by hand. A tool so specific to this tradition that it has its own identity.

This is what living architecture looks like. Not just the walls and the wood. But the rituals, the tools, and the knowledge that keeps it standing.

Most people think Shivratri happens once a year. It doesn’t.

There is a Shivratri every single month. Twelve of them. Tonight is the one that falls in Sawan.

It always lands on the 14th night of the fading moon, one night before the moon disappears completely. What makes tonight different from Mahashivratri is not the moon. It is what arrives with it.

The Kanwariyas walk for days with Ganga water on their shoulders, just for tonight. Because Shiva swallowed the poison that came from the churning of the ocean so nobody else had to. His throat burned. The water is for him.

Mahashivratri is a night of prayer. Sawan Shivratri is a night of arrival.

If you are fasting tonight, Nish*ta Kaal falls between 12:05am and 12:48am. Parana after 5:49am on Wednesday 12 August.

India doesn’t have one version of anything. That’s the best thing about it.

Why does India have two Sawans?

Right now, two Sawans are running in India. And both of them are correct.

If you are in North India, your Sawan runs from 30 July to 28 August. If you are in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa or South India, yours runs from 13 August to 11 September.

The difference is not of faith. It is of the calendar.

In North India, the month ends on the full moon, Purnimanta. Everywhere else it ends on the new moon, Amanta. That gap of roughly fifteen days is why your neighbour's Sawan and yours begin on different dates.

But here is the thing. A tithi does not belong to a calendar. A tithi belongs to the moon. The moon over Jammu is the same moon over Chennai, the same night. Both calendars are reading that one moon. They just begin counting from a different point.

Two calendars. One moon. No date is wrong.

Before plastic took over Indian childhoods, every region had its own toys. Made from wood, clay, cloth, and lacquer. Carved by hand and painted with natural dyes.

India's toy-making tradition goes back 5,000 years. Terracotta figurines have been found in Harappan excavations. Toys were never just play. They were storytelling companions, ritual objects, and miniature carriers of a community's imagination.

Today, the average Indian child plays with plastic made in a factory. The wooden top, the clay elephant, the bobblehead doll, these are becoming museum pieces instead of childhood memories.

A toy made by hand carries the village it was made in. A toy made by a machine carries nothing.
