Honnavar or Honnavara is a port town and taluk headquarters in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state. Honnavar is famous for its beaches and the fabulous dance drama form, Yakshagana. The name Honnavar might have originated from the word 'Honnavari' or 'Honnavare' which was a well known plant in the region. Several inscriptions have mentioned Honnavar as 'Honnavaru' or 'Honninavara' which mea

ns the land of prosperity or the land of gold (Honnu means Gold in Kannada). Honnavar has also a history of having the name "Honnupura" which might have been a major market and export hub for gold and related things. A long rail bridge across river Sharavati, constructed as part of the Konkan Railway is a major attraction of Honnavar. While joining the sea, the river has created some islands. Among them Mavinkurva is the largest and the most beautiful. Ramathirtha is another attraction and beautiful location in Honnavar. Ramathirtha is situated on the Honnavar-Chandavar road at a distance of about 3 km. This tank (pushkarini) which is 50 steps below the ground level is very spacious. The water from a height falls into the tank from two different points called Ramathirtha and Laxmanthirtha. It is believed that, Sri Rama, Sita and Laxman had a holy dip in the tank during their vanavasa. Other tourist attractions include the 'Apsara Konda Falls' (Pond of the Celestial Nymphs) located at a distance of 5 km, Kasarkod beach located at a distance of 2 km, Basavaraja Durga, a fortified spot is an island in the Arbian sea located just 3 km from Sharavathi mouth and Idagunji Maha Ganapathi Temple.
