Kalimpong's colonial history began in the mid-19th century when it was annexed by British India from Bhutan following the Anglo-Bhutan War (1864–1865) under the Treaty of Sinchula. Before this, the area was a tiny hamlet known as "Kalenpung" in the indigenous Lepcha language.
