Gangtok, Aug. 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Sikkim and several northeastern states on Tuesday, warning of a heightened risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the IMD, parts of Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places expected to record extremely heavy showers exceeding 20 cm.
The weather office has also flagged a moderate to high risk of flash floods in parts of Sikkim and the Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal, urging residents and local authorities to remain vigilant.
In addition, isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, while Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to experience heavy showers. The ongoing spell of intense rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya is expected to continue through Wednesday.
Authorities have advised people living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and stay updated with official weather advisories. The persistent downpour may lead to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides and disruptions to road connectivity in affected regions.
