Japan to relax visa rules for India, Indonesia

Buoyed by a surge in arrivals from Southeast Asia after relaxing visa regulations, Japan tourism officials are hoping for a similar response when it launches new visa rules for Indian and Indonesian travellers.

Japan National Tourism Organization figures show an average of more than 50% growth in the first eight months of the year thanks to relaxed visa rules for tourists from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Indian travellers will be able to apply for multiple-entry visas later this year and Indonesian passport holders will be able to enter Japan visa-free.

"Accessibility between India and Japan is actually not an issue as there are direct flights from Mumbai and New Delhi to Tokyo," said Kiyonori Ogawa, director of marketing at the JNTO.

"The issue with India is the visa requirements and the need for more promotional activities in the market."

Ogawa also noted that the Japanese Yen's devaluation also contributed to increased tourist numbers, making it more affordable for travellers.

Called Etihad Airways Partners, the partnership aims to offer customers improved networks and schedules and enhanced frequent flyer benefits, said the Abu Dhabi-based carrier.

It said membership is open to any airline, even those that are part of an existing alliance, such as airberlin, which is a member of oneworld.

"The key emphasis for Etihad Airways Partners is a strong commercial partnership and shared values," the airline said.

James Hogan, President and CEO, Etihad Airways, said, "We are broadening our business model to articulate and define a partner proposition for like-minded airlines, which will result in synergies and efficiencies for participating airlines on the one side, and enhanced network choice, service and frequent flyer benefits for the consumer on the other. It will be displayed on aircraft and on branded materials by a group of airlines working together to connect travellers around the world, and increasingly to harmonise standards in the air and on the ground."
