Jallianwala Bagh Massacre: A Socio-Historical and Geographic Monograph

The afternoon of April 13, 1919, unfolded like any other Baisakhi in Amritsar—filled with pilgrims, traders, and families drifting through narrow lanes in quiet celebration. Few among them knew that the city stood on the edge of one of the darkest moments in India’s colonial history. By late afternoon, thousands had gathered inside Jallianwala Bagh, an enclosed ground hemmed in by high walls and narrow exits. Some came to protest the oppressive Rowlatt Act, while others were simply drawn by the festive day, unaware of any prohibitions. What followed was not a clash, not a riot—but a calculated act of terror. Without warning, Reginald Dyer marched in with armed troops and ordered them to fire directly into the unarmed crowd. Panic erupted instantly. The only narrow exit became a choke point of desperation as bullets rained down relentlessly. In those ten harrowing minutes, over a thousand lives were shattered—many cut down where they stood, others crushed in the chaos, and some leaping into the now-infamous Martyrs’ Well in a final attempt to escape. The firing ceased only when ammunition ran low, leaving behind a ground soaked in silence, grief, and irreversible loss. That evening, as the sun set over Amritsar, it illuminated not a festival—but a wound that would forever alter the course of India’s fight for freedom....
