Jackfruit is a large tropical fruit native to southwest India but now grown in various tropical regions worldwide. It is known for its unique size, with some fruits weighing up to 80 pounds (36 kg), and its distinctive, spiky green or yellow exterior. The inside of a jackfruit contains large, sweet, edible bulbs of flesh, which are yellow when ripe and have a sweet, fruity flavor. Unripe jackfruit is often used in savory dishes due to its mild flavor and meaty texture, making it a popular meat substitute, especially in vegetarian and vegan diets.
Jackfruit is not only delicious but also nutritious. It is a rich source of dietary fiber, vitamins (such as vitamin C and vitamin A), and minerals (including potassium and magnesium). The seeds can also be eaten after being boiled or roasted, and the wood is sometimes used in furniture making due to its durability.
Additionally, jackfruit has become increasingly popular worldwide for its versatility, being used in both sweet (like jackfruit cakes and jams) and savory dishes (such as curries, tacos, and pulled "pork" substitutes).
