As a fleet owner, one question that frequently comes up is "How many trucks should I ideally own?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some factors to consider as you determine your optimal fleet size:
Start by looking at the demands of your business - current and projected cargo volumes, routes, service area etc. This data provides insight into your transportation capacity needs. It's wise to keep some buffer for seasonal surges or new client onboarding.
Make sure to track metrics like average miles driven per truck per month. You want high utilization of your existing vehicles before expanding. After all, underutilized trucks just become a drain on profits.
Your driver pool is another major factor. Align your fleet size to the number of drivers, accounting for time off, turnover etc. to avoid being perpetually short-staffed. This has a domino effect on delivery timelines and customer service.
Speaking of timelines, strike that balance between number of trucks and ability to meet ETAs consistently with some flexibility. Too few trucks and you may struggle with on-time performance.
Other overheads like maintenance, parking and insurance costs also rise with fleet size. So optimize to keep these expenses proportional to your revenues, not ballooning out of control.
Finally, have a rotation plan to regularly retire aging trucks at lifecycle end. A bloated fleet leads to some trucks well overstaying their utility phase.
As business conditions evolve, re-evaluate these factors periodically. Rightsizing the fleet through data-driven analysis and projections is key.
