Interesting - A Gaddi Man taking meals in the hills. Gaddi is a tribe in which are shepherds for ages. people travel to Himalaya's with their flocks in search of higher grazing fields. They live in stone made temporary houses called 'Madh" or in tents.This movement of Gaddi people can be observed in all over Himachal - Kangra, Lahoul, Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Manali and J&k towards Leh till Pang region.

Gaddi travelling with their big flocks of 500 to 1500 sheeps and goats. Rarely seen Snow- Leopard and Bears often follow the flocks in search of an opportunity to hunt. During monsoon, all grazing fields closed for grazing in lower region, which makes them to move in upper parts of Himalaya's in search for highly nutritious grass. They again start moving back from mountains in the month of September.

Interesting Facts - A rare pic showing Mountain men drying meat in a Shepherd's house.
Every year in winters, people of upper valley store meat for winters. To avoid spoiling the meat, they cut it in long pieces and hang it over chullah (place for burning fire with woods). Smoke make it dry and helpful in preserving it for long. One can store it for months. Smoked meat is quite tasty and can be used in winters when all roads to their villages closed and they left with limited resources.

Trekking from to Bada Bhangal to Manali is full of many things which we only heard from old people, but this is the trek to experience those. Trekking to this hamlet is really a great experience of life to know shepherd's life. Shepherd's in Himachal is known as a Tribe called "Gaddi". Gaddi tribe spend almost 6 months in mountains with their goats, sheep and shepherd dogs. They move from one place to other in search of highly nutritious mountain grass to feed their flocks.
