There’s a reason cherry blossom season feels different in Japan. 🌸 Sakura bloom for only a short time each spring. Their brief appearance has long been associated in Japanese culture with the beauty and impermanence of life. For a few weeks, people gather beneath the trees simply to enjoy the moment.

In Thailand, even the way you say hello has meaning. 🙏

The wai may look simple: palms together with a slight bow. But not every wai is the same.

The position of the hands and the depth of the bow can change depending on who you are greeting, reflecting respect and Thailand's deeply rooted social traditions.

It's one of those details you might barely notice at first. Then, as you spend time in Thailand, you begin to see it everywhere.

And that's part of what we enjoy about travel: learning to notice the small things that help us understand a place and its people.

With the new month of Elul, we begin our journey toward the Day of Judgment and forgiveness on Yom Kippur.

I decided to begin mine at the teen jail in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem. I was thoroughly searched, but they let me bring my guitar.

One jail gate.
Then another.
And another.
Six solid steel gates before I reached the boys inside.

Some were allowed to meet me in a cell that had been converted into a shul. Others were considered too violent to leave their cells, so I stood in the hallway and sang for them.

In jail, you do not show weakness.
You do not cry.
But spend ten minutes with these boys and you realize they are crying.

Just not where anyone can see it.
So many tears. So much brokenness. All kept inside.

And yet Yeshayahu gives us a promise:
“He will wipe away the tears from every face.” Yeshayahu 25:8

As we walk toward the Day of Judgment and forgiveness, let’s walk around with a pack of tissues.

Let’s help God dry some of those tears.

Because sometimes the best way to dry someone’s tears is simply to hold their hand and cry with them.

I went to the jail to cry with these boys.
Even though no one there was allowed to cry.

Holding Hands

Holly, a member of our Kosher World Adventures family, was struck by a car on Shabbat and did not survive.

She and Andrew had both found love for a second time and chose to honeymoon with us in Hawaii. They had only nine months together.

There is an image I keep thinking about. In Israel, when kindergarten children go on a field trip, they walk in pairs, holding hands.

Sometimes I think that is how all of us should travel through life.
Find your walk-mate.
Walk together.
Hold hands.

On Shabbat, Andrew lost his walk-mate. Now it is our turn to hold his hand.

As we enter Elul and begin looking toward Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I hope we can say: God, I have tried to spend my time holding other people’s hands. Now I am asking You to hold mine.

Why does autumn feel different in Japan? In many places, autumn is something we admire. We notice the colors, take a few photos, and move on.

In Japan, the season becomes part of everyday life.

A quiet temple.

A walk beneath crimson leaves.
