Minister Patrick O’Donovan will host the National Famine Commemoration at the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, Co. Galway today. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will officiate at the event and deliver the keynote address. This is the first time the State Commemoration has taken place in Galway. It will be broadcast live on the RTÉ News channel and will be available for replay on the RTÉ Player and on irishfamine.ie at a later date.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:
“The National Famine Commemoration provides an important opportunity to reflect on one of the most profound and defining periods in our history. While the Famine represents immense loss and suffering, it also reminds us of the resilience of ordinary people and the enduring strength of community in times of hardship.”

Minister O’Donovan said at the event:
“It is an honour to host the 2026 National Famine Commemoration in the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, to remember all those who suffered due to the Great Irish Famine. I thank all those who attended this dignified and solemn event and acknowledge all those who made this event possible.”

So thats it for another year! Thank you to everyone who came and took out our bikes this week.
It was great seeing so many people laughing and smiling out around Portumna. Individuals, couples, families and friends all enjoying cycling.
maybe over but we will still be here offering visitors to Dick's Bike Hire, Portumna and Dicks Bike Hire at Ballycommon House a wide range of cycling options and cycling pleasure.

Our National Tidy Towns application has been submitted since Monday 11th May.
Application dates run from May '25 until May '26. Thanks to all those who contributed to this document. The walkabout judging commences from the June Bhol and runs throughout the Summer so our volunteers are very busy out and about performing tasks to enhance our beautiful town. 🙏🌟🌿 THANK YOU to all in the community who are making extra effort around their homes, businesses and buildings.🙏🌟🌿👍
