We welcomed RTÉ Prime Time to Sliabh Beagh last week to help highlight the issues that small businesses like ours are facing when seeking insurance.

The episode aired last night on RTÉ One and featured a number of adventure operators all struggling with the extortionate costs of public liability insurance. The programme contrasted the differences north and south of the border and illustrated how the issues around insurance are a uniquely Irish problem. Ireland is the outlier when it comes to huge premiums for leisure insurance.

It was great to be able to contribute to this discussion and to also provide aerial footage that helps sell north Monaghan to a national audience. Although the circumstances aren't great, the shop and village look great 😄

The full episode is available to view on the RTÉ Player.

"The issue of having to stop trading, because the insurance is too expensive is exclusive to Ireland," Mr Lapeyère said.

He said that "in no country do we hear of outdoor companies having to stop trading because their premium is too high."

"The problem at this level is Irish, 100% Irish," he added.

High insurance costs and difficulties obtaining cover for businesses operating in the tourism sector have the potential to seriously undermine Ireland's overall tourism offering, Fáilte Ireland has warned.

We were happy that the weather held off for this morning's hike out to Sliabh Beagh's highest point. It was nice to see so many familiar faces back on the hills with us, as well as lots of new faces.

Hopefully this won't be our last hike, with more to come.

Notice of Temporary Closure

We regret to inform you that we will be temporarily suspending all activities and bookings, and closing the doors to our coffee shop from April 10, 2023.

Like many businesses in the leisure industry, we have experienced great difficulty in sourcing fair insurance cover. We have worked tirelessly over the last number of months trying to obtain adequate cover prior to our renewal date this month. Unfortunately, there is no competition in the leisure insurance market in Ireland. As a result, our premiums have risen substantially year-on-year to the point at which running a small family business becomes unviable. This is all despite there being no meaningful change in the nature of our business or the rigorous safety protocols that we have in place to mitigate risk.

If the issues in the Irish insurance market aren’t addressed, the future of the tourism and leisure industry in Ireland looks bleak.
At this point, we have contacted all those that had bookings with us over the coming months and regrettably informed them of cancellation.

As you may know, we are a family-run business, and this has not been an easy decision to make. For the last two years, we have worked hard to promote the Sliabh Beagh area through guided hikes and cycles. Our goal is to encourage people of all ages to get outdoors and enjoy Sliabh Beagh. We will still be doing what we can to support that purpose, albeit on a smaller scale.

We appreciate your support since first opening in April 2021. It has been a pleasure meeting so many new people and we have thoroughly enjoyed the adventure over the past two years. We’ll be working away in the background trying to find a solution to this. In the meantime, if you have any questions concerning the suspension of business and bookings or about Sliabh Beagh in general, we’re available at any time.
