🎬 A historic moment for Irish film.
Killarney actress Jessie Buckley has become the first Irish woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, earning the honour for her role as Agnes in Hamnet.
The film adapts the bestselling novel by Coleraine-born author Maggie O’Farrell, exploring the grief and love that surrounded the death of Shakespeare’s son and the story said to have inspired Hamlet.
Buckley was already widely respected for her performances on stage and screen, including her Oscar nomination in 2022 for The Lost Daughter. Her win now marks a major milestone for Irish actors in Hollywood.
In the 98-year history of the Oscars, only Saoirse Ronan and Ruth Negga had previously been nominated for Best Actress. Buckley is now the first Irish woman to take home the award.
Congratulations Jessie Buckley on a remarkable achievement for Irish film and storytelling.
