🛟Dun Laoghaire RNLI Coxswain retires after 36 years saving lives at sea

Dun Laoghaire RNLI Coxswain Mark McGibney has closed the chapter on a 36-year period of service with the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea. Mark leaves the RNLI with 386 lifeboat service launches on his record. During those callouts, 661 people were brought to safety, 36 of whom were classed as ‘lives saved’ by the Institution.

Mark McGibney volunteered on Dun Laoghaire lifeboat crew from 1989 to 2025 and was appointed Coxswain of the station’s Trent class lifeboat in 2002. Among the other roles he held while a volunteer at the station, were Lifeboat Helm, All-Weather Mechanic, Lifeboat Trainer Assessor, First Aider, Shore Crew and Navigator.

Speaking on his long record of service, RNLI Regional Business Lead, Mike Grocott said, ‘It is an incredible thing to be able to serve your community as a lifeboat volunteer. Thirty-six years is a proud achievement and there are many people, both locally and further afield, who Mark would have helped during some of their most difficult times. I wish him well in his retirement and thank him for his service to the charity.’

Mark will be presented with a framed Certificate of Service from the RNLI to reflect his years of service and contribution to the Institution.
