Irish passengers flying with Ryanair, Aer Lingus or Wizz Air will get free cabin bags by law from 2027, after the EU struck a deal ending 13 years of debate over passenger rights.
Since almost all flights out of Dublin, Cork and Shannon are run by EU based airlines, the change will affect the vast majority of Irish travellers.
Every passenger will be entitled to a free personal item and a small wheeled bag included in the ticket price, putting an end to one of Ryanair's most lucrative fees.
The deal also keeps compensation rules in place, so passengers can still claim between €250 and €600 for delays of three hours or more, or for cancelled flights.
Other changes include no extra charge for parents sitting beside children under 14 and no requirement to download an airline's app just to access a boarding pass.
Airlines have warned the changes could push ticket prices up, though those happy to fly without a wheeled bag may be offered a discount instead.
