We are getting a massive amount of messages yet again from people wondering what is going to happen, with many already starting to worry about the winter months ahead.
Fuel has gone back over €2 per litre, and that has a knock-on effect on the price of almost everything. We hear the frustration, and we feel it right across the board.
Families are wondering how they are going to survive the months ahead. Truck drivers who are on the road every day are being forced to increase their prices to customers just to stay afloat. Fishermen are struggling with the cost of keeping their boats at sea, while farmers are on their knees trying to fuel the machinery they need to keep their farms running.
It feels like all anyone does in this country now is survive.
Years ago, one wage could support a family and people could still have some quality of life. Now, in many households, both parents are working, children are in childcare from early morning, and at the end of the week there still might not be enough money left to pay all the bills.
Some of the stories and messages we receive from ordinary people are terrible, yet people feel that this Government simply does not want to listen.
People need to start preparing themselves for the possibility of further protests, because if things continue the way they are going, we may be left with no other option. Judging by the level of support and the sheer number of messages we are receiving, any future protest could be far bigger than the last one.
The Government has the power to help people rather than continually taking more from them. As fuel prices rise at the pumps, the amount of tax collected on fuel also rises, while families, businesses, farmers, fishermen and hauliers are struggling to keep going.
People are tired of simply surviving. They want to be able to work, provide for their families and have some quality of life.
Something has to change. People need to be listened to, and meaningful action needs to be taken.
If that doesn’t happen, we may have no choice but to take to the roads again and make our voices heard.
