Fast Lines’ newest vessel, Fast Anna Sofia, has made its inaugural call to Port of Drogheda on Wednesday, marking another milestone in the long-standing trading relationship between the Belgian shipping company and Drogheda Port.
The vessel is one of two new ships recently launched by Fast Lines in Antwerp and is named in honour of Scheers family member Anna Sophia. The investment represents a significant commitment by the company to the future of short-sea shipping and the continued strengthening of trade links between Belgium and Ireland.
To commemorate the vessel’s first visit, the Captain of Fast Anna Sofia, Capt Mirek Kieca, was presented with traditional gifts of bread, Oriel salt and Drogheda Port honey from the ports indigenous black honey bees — symbolic tokens of welcome and friendship.
Speaking on the occasion, Drogheda Port welcomed the continued investment by Fast Lines and highlighted the importance of the company’s regular services in supporting regional trade and connectivity.
The new vessels are expected to become regular visitors to Drogheda, transporting a wide range of break-bulk import and export cargoes and further enhancing the port’s role as a key hub for Irish and European trade.
The arrival of Fast Anna Sofia underlines the enduring partnership between Fast Lines and Drogheda Port and reflects growing confidence in the future of sustainable short-sea shipping services between Ireland and continental Europe.

A powerful night at Droichead Arts Centre 🎶

The Julianstown Youth Orchestra joined SJ McArdle to bring Tidewaiter to life in a stunning orchestral reimagining — blending music, history, and storytelling inspired by Drogheda’s port. Months of collaboration, talent, and heart led to this unforgettable performance and video launch. A proud moment for these young musicians and a beautiful celebration of community and creativity.
Led by Lorcan Daly and Maia Matthews, with arrangement by Paul O’Brien, and brought to screen by Brian Connolly (Bang Bang Visuals), Breffni Holohan, and John McGovern — this was a true collaboration.

With thanks to Patricia Hegarty, Paul Fleming, and Droichead Director Colette Farrell for their support in making it all happen.
A proud celebration of young talent, creativity, and community.

The Drogheda Port Bee hives are active and buzzing after a long winter. An Asian Hornet by-catch friendly trap has been placed with the hives to protect the native black Irish honey bees.
The Asian hornet, which has already been discovered in Ireland, is an invasive species that poses a serious threat to pollinators, especially honeybees.
A by-catch friendly trap is designed to reduce this unintended impact. The trap is carefully sized to allow smaller native insects to escape, while still capturing the larger Asian hornets.
Such selective trapping is particularly important in Ireland, where ecosystems are relatively intact but vulnerable to invasive species. Early detection and targeted control of the Asian hornet could prevent it from becoming established. By using by-catch friendly traps, Ireland can respond proactively protecting pollinators and maintaining ecological balance without causing unnecessary harm to native insect populations.

Bremore Ireland Port: Strategic Choice for Ireland’s New East Coast Naval Base – Supporting National Defence, EU Military Mobility, and Regional Security

Building on the Government’s renewed focus on maritime security and defence capability, and in alignment with European Union goals on the protection of critical infrastructure. Bremore Ireland Port stands out as a compelling candidate for Ireland’s next naval base on the east coast.Situated on Ireland’s rapidly expanding Dublin-Belfast economic corridor, Bremore Ireland Port represents one of the most strategically placed deep-water port sites on the island of Ireland, with direct connections to major transport networks and significant operational advantages for both national and EU security missions.

The Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee TD, launched Ireland’s first-ever National Maritime Security Strategy to deliver an improved maritime security environment where citizens and Irish interests are protected.

Strategic Geographic Location
Bremore’s coastline offers naturally deep-water access just offshore — an essential requirement for naval operations and rapid deployment of vessels with deep drafts. Its position avoids the more exposed southern and western approaches, providing a naturally sheltered maritime environment for naval activities.

National and Regional Security Imperatives
As Ireland strengthens its National Maritime Security Strategy to better protect territorial waters, critical undersea infrastructure, and trade routes, a dedicated naval base at Bremore would enhance surveillance, readiness, and response capacity in the Irish Sea. Current developments in Irish maritime defence highlight growing strategic imperatives to monitor and protect subsea cables, energy interconnectors, and commercial maritime approaches — areas where a modern naval presence would be pivotal.

Integration with EU Defence Policy and Dual-Use Investments
The EU is actively investing in transport infrastructure that serves dual civil and military purposes, recognising that ports included in the TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network) and military mobility corridors will play a critical role in future European defence logistics. Bremore’s designation on the core TEN-T network underlines its potential role in fulfilling both economic and security needs across the island and throughout the wider EU area.

Broader National Benefits
Beyond defence, establishing a naval base at Bremore will bring significant economic and social advantages for the region — including job creation across naval, logistics, maritime, and ancillary industries, and increased investment in skills development and infrastructure. These benefits complement Bremore’s broader vision as a world-class multi-modal energy and logistics hub, supporting Ireland’s climate, security, and economic goals alike.

‘In terms of EU Port strategy when constructing or upgrading infrastructure on those parts of the trans-European transport network that present dual use investments, Member States need to ensure the technical specification for a minimum of 12 meter draft. Bremore provides all facets of the minimum technical specifications including deep water.’ Mr. Paul Fleming, Group CEO Drogheda Port Company.

The conservation of the Drogheda North Lighthouse in Mornington has officially been completed after more than a decade of careful restoration. The restoration project was led by Drogheda Port Company, under the careful guidance of conservation architect Fergal McGirl and supported by Meath County Council through the Built Heritage Investment Scheme.

Built in 1842, this landmark is one of three lighthouses commissioned by the Drogheda Harbour Commissioners to guide vessels safely into the Port of Drogheda, serving as both a daytime landmark and a lighted beacon at night. Together, these structures form an important architectural group that has shaped the coastal landscape for generations.

Works included stabilising the historic structure, restoring the lantern and roof, and fully conserving the wrought-iron tower using traditional craftsmanship. Despite unprecedented delays caused by COVID-19, the project has now restored the lighthouse to a structurally secure and weather-tight condition, preserving this historic maritime landmark for years to come.

Restoration of the East Lighthouse will begin later this year.

St. Oliver’s Community College TY Students Bring a Message of Hope to Drogheda.

Transition Year students Sophie Donegan and Senan Hennessy-Moore from St. Oliver’s Community College, together with their art teacher Sarah Mc Alevey, have added a vibrant new layer of meaning to the Mall Buoy in Drogheda through a heartfelt collaboration with SOSAD Ireland. The Drogheda Mall Buoy, once a hardworking maritime marker that spent decades at sea safeguarding sailors and ships, has found new life as a vibrant community landmark. Repurposed and brought ashore, it now serves as a creative canvas regularly painted by local charities to share messages of hope, awareness, and support. Today, it stands not only as a piece of nautical history but also as a colourful symbol of artistic expression and a focal point for the community it proudly represents. The painting of the Mall Buoy is an ongoing community initiative led by Drogheda Port Company, supported by local companies such as Murtaghs Paints, and this year the TY students from St Olivers Community College were invited to contribute their time, creativity and compassion to the project. As part of their design, the students painted the SOSAD logo and freephone number, ensuring that anyone who may be struggling knows that support is always within reach.Their artwork stands as a powerful reminder of hope, especially at Christmas time, when many people can feel particularly vulnerable. This project highlights the strength of community and compassion, reminding everyone that help is a phone call away.
