onemover.ie Friday, half five. Parked up along the canal in Portobello, doors open, that low golden light doing its usual thing — making the blankets look like they belong in a gallery and not the back of a van that's done two runs already today.
First job was a woman in Drumcondra who'd been hosting a futon in her living room since her son left for college in September. Not sitting on it. Not unfolding it. Just… accommodating it. Stepping around it. Apologising for it when guests came over. Took twenty minutes to wrap it, move it through the hall without grazing a single skirting board, and load it up. She stood in the empty corner and laughed. Actually laughed. Said she was going to buy a plant. A big one.
Second job was one of those beautiful Friday-afternoon jobs where nothing's urgent and everything's satisfying. A couple in Rathmines clearing the last few bits from a house they're about to rent out. Two bookcases, a chest of drawers, a box of old records that smelled exactly like every charity shop you've ever been in. Took an hour. No scratches. No stress. Just the quiet rhythm of getting it done while the sun moved across the kitchen floor.
And now here we are. Weekend's hovering. The canal's doing its glittery thing. People are starting to drift home with that Friday looseness in their shoulders. If there's something in your house that's been quietly overstaying its welcome — a piece of furniture, a pile of junk, a corner that's been making you sigh every time you walk past — I've got one slot tomorrow morning. Let's get it gone while July's still showing off and you've still got the whole warm weekend ahead to enjoy the space you just got back.
