The airport was delighted this afternoon to facilitate and welcome over 100 politicians, MEPs, business leaders, and policy experts from across Europe to the West of Ireland, arriving on a special charter flight from Brussels.

The Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) Summer University takes place from June 10–12, bringing senior European political figures to Galway. EU-US relations and transatlantic trade will form the core themes of the event, with discussions also focusing on Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The visit was coordinated by Maria Walsh, MEP, who, alongside Joe Gilmore Managing Director of Ireland West Airport, greeted the President of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, Manfred Weber, at the aircraft steps and presented him with a gift on behalf of the airport in appreciation of their visit to the West of Ireland

The visit is the EU’s largest political group to the West of Ireland, placing Galway at the top of the European political agenda. This is one of the largest political gatherings of MEPs in the EU, and it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our region on the European stage.

Things not allowed in hand luggage, Part 1 ✈️

We’re all for packing the essentials… but your rapid-fire holiday defence system will have to sit this one out 😅

Before travelling through Ireland West Airport, please check what you can and can’t bring in your hand luggage — it’ll help keep security moving faster than this thing fires 😉

Monsignor Horans famous Ford Cortina returned to the Runway, 41 years after its last appearance at the airport ❤️❤️

Special thanks to Monsignor Horans nephew Bartley Horan for bringing the Cortina to the airport on Thursday for our 40th Anniversary celebration event - great memories - the car is in great shape 🙌🙏

30/05/2026

On this day 40 years ago, 30th May 1986, Connaught Airport (as it was known then) was officially opened.

As the late, great Monsignor Horan said on the day, 'This is the greatest thing that has happened in Connacht in the last 100 years, and this is the greatest day of my life'.

What a journey it has been since. We are forever grateful ❤️

What a night!!

A heartfelt thank-you to all who joined us to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the airport's official opening. Whether you were there in person or listened or watched online, thank you for being a part of a special night.

This was a night to celebrate the last 40 years but more importantly to recognise the people who played a huge part in the early years of the airport - we were thrilled to be joined by some very special guests to recall some lovely memories over the past 40 years ❤️

A special word of thanks to the Mid West Radio team for a superb production on the night 🙌
