Looking forward to welcoming our first group of workshop participants since Covid this Sunday!!!
The workshop will focus on how horsepower can be put to use on a smallholding, and we will practise first steps of long reining the horse from the ground to using some of our farm tools - cart, sled, harrows, logging equipment.

It's great to see that there is so much interest in our upcoming workshop on 5th November! Really looking forward to sharing experiences, skills and our space for participants to work with our horses. Winnie and Flora will be a big part of this workshop day, teaming up with participants for practise in long-reining and navigating horse-drawn tools form the ground!

After Covid stopped us in 2020, we are now returning to offering our popular 1-day workshops on using horses to work in harness on the farm. The first date is this Autumn:
Beginners welcome!
Date: Sunday 5th November 2023 10am to 5pm
on our Hairy Henry Care Farm, Bantry, West Cork.
Course fee €100 includes coffee/tea on arrival, homemade lunch and refreshments.
This day is suited to all who enjoy outdoor and farm work and either have horses or play with the idea of getting horses to work the land.
Topics covered:
how to choose a suitable horse for work in harness
work horse care and welfare
work horse training and handling
harness and other equipment needed
different horsedrawn implements
hands-on exercises to work with horses with long reins from the ground
hands-on work with a range of horsedrawn implements and their use: spring harrow, chain harrow, sled, cart, logging equipment
safety when working with horses in harness
This workshop will give you the theory and practical experience to find out whether working with horses is an option for you. It will cater for all levels - whether you are new to horses, just want to experience horses at work or want to learn the basics to get started yourself.

We would like to re-start our work horse introduction courses - Covid stopped us there a few years ago! - and are inviting expressions of interest, as we can only run the course with sufficient bookings.
Anyone out here, please let us know by comment below or PM if you are interested in a 1-day hands-on workshop about using real horse power on smallholdings.

Henry and Flora turning the sod. There's nothing quite like working in complete harmony and perfect rhythm as a team of ploughperson, horse handler and two strong enthusiastic horses who really understand what the job is about. For me, it tops most things in terms of satisfying effective positive communication, and feeling the bond and trust, and 'no fuss' team work.
