Front End Friday ⚓

MV Puffin (MMSI: 250104550) approaching the harbour after carrying out operations around the Roadstone Jetty back at the end of April this year ⚓

MV Puffin is a 14ft (4.2 metres approx.) dive and work support vessel operated by Marine Services out of Dun Laoghaire. She was formerly in service with the Commissioners of Irish Lights as a buoy laying tug. She is powered by a Caterpillar 3208 diesel engine. ⚓

A researcher from Bangor University working on Project FisHistory, which is looking at the history of herring and herring fishing in the Irish Sea, including their spawning, both in the past and today.

They are researching historical records, modern surveys, and are keen to hear stories from people in communities where herring fishing was once (or still is) part of life. They would love to speak with former or current fishermen, anglers, fish processors, charter boat operators, historians, or anyone with family connections to the industry.

A researcher working on the project will be travelling up the east coast of Ireland and Northern Ireland the week after next (3rd- 8th August) and would be really grateful for the chance to speak with anyone willing to assist with the project.

Water Safety Ireland are marking International Lifeguard Appreciation Day today.

At the beach, lifeguards are ready and qualified to monitor and assist swimmers and perform life-saving measures when necessary. These professionals stay alert, vigilant and attentive so others can have fun in the water.

David and Harry are pictured at the cove in Arklow. David is in his fourth year of lifeguarding at Arklow, while his youngest brother, Harry, is in his first year as a lifeguard. Their brother Matthew is also a lifeguard, currently in his second year at the cove. It's truly a family affair!

Water Safety Ireland, Irish Coast Guard, and RNLI are urging swimmers, visitors and holidaymakers to take extra care around the coast this Bank Holiday weekend and to familiarise themselves with local conditions before entering the water.

If you are taking part in activities on or near the water, remember to:
• Check the weather and tide times before venturing out
• If walking along the shore, remain alert to rising tides to avoid stranding
• Make every effort to choose a lifeguarded waterway, listed at https://buff.ly/1CZSbqz
• Avoid cold-water shock by entering the water slowly
• Be aware of rip currents, which can rapidly carry you away from shore
• Swim with others and within your depth
• Leave inflatable toys at home
• Avoid alcohol
• Always wear a lifejacket or suitable buoyancy aid for your activity
• Ensure children are kept under constant, uninterrupted supervision near water
• Let someone ashore know where you are going and when you are due back
• Always carry a means of calling for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone or a marine VHF radio.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
