Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several major tectonic plates meet. The movement and collision of these plates, particularly through subduction, causes rock deep beneath the Earth’s surface to melt and form magma. As pressure builds, magma can eventually rise and erupt through volcanoes.
🌋 As of 7 September 2026, volcanic activity has been recorded at several Indonesian volcanoes, with Mount Ibu, Mount Semeru and Mount Ili Lewotolok among those continuing to erupt. Anak Krakatau has also been the focus of major recent activity, producing significant volcanic ash that has affected air travel and several regions
