Today: Central Market Hall 🏛
Did you know that Budapest’s Central Market Hall once had its own railway - and a hidden connection to the Danube?
When it opened in 1897, the market was designed as a modern food distribution centre. Railway tracks led directly into the building, allowing goods to arrive from outside Budapest.
But that wasn't all.
A roughly 120-metre-long underground tunnel connected the market hall to the Danube, allowing goods arriving by boat to be transported directly inside.
So while shoppers were browsing the stalls above, trains, boats and tunnels were quietly keeping the city supplied with food.
Today, almost none of this is visible.
