이 공항은 1998년 7월 6일 옛 홍콩 국제공항을 대체하여 개항한 신공항으로, 중국 본토와 동아시아 및 동남아시아의 여러 국가로 가는 항공 관문이자 홍콩을 통하는 여객과 화물의 주요한 환승 섬의 이름을 따서 첵랍콕 국제공항이라고도 부름니다.
