Planning to charter a yacht in Greece? Here’s what you need to know about boating licences

If you’re planning to charter a yacht in Greece 🇬🇷⛵, there are a couple of important crew requirements to know about.

You’ll need:

✔️ At least one certified skipper
✔️ One experienced crew member (First Mate)
✔️ Both must be over 18

The skipper should be confident handling a yacht in marinas and tight spaces, anchoring and mooring in different conditions, and using navigation skills to safely plan each day at sea.

The First Mate should have “Competent Crew” level experience or an equivalent certification from a recognised sailing association.

The skipper should know how to handle a yacht confidently — including anchoring, mooring, navigation, and sailing in different conditions.

Accepted licences/certifications in Greece include:

✔️ ICC (International Certificate of Competence)
✔️ IPC (International Proficiency Certificate)
✔️ ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising
✔️ US Sailing Bareboat Cruising Course
✔️ Canadian certifications such as CYA Intermediate Cruising Standard or Pleasure Craft Operator Card

⚠️ Important: Since 2019, Greece no longer accepts the RYA Day Skipper certificate on its own. If you have Day Skipper, it’s strongly recommended to also get an ICC.

The First Mate doesn’t necessarily need a licence, but if they don’t have one, they’ll need:

• A sailing resume/CV showing their experience
• A Declaration of Honour confirming they’re competent crew

Also:

📌 Copies of all certificates must usually be sent to the charter company at least 4 weeks before your trip

📌 Bring the original certificates with you — port authorities may ask to see them

Always remember: final approval is up to the local Greek Port Authority on the day of departure.

Sign On & Stamp Out in Greece 🇬🇷: A Must-Know Guide for Seaman Book Holders

An assignment must be made to a shipping agent at the port where the vessel is moored. The agent will submit the relevant seafarer engagement declaration for the crew member who is due to arrive, to the local Port Authority, which in turn will inform Passport Control by forwarding the seafarer engagement permit.

If the foreign national arrives at Athens Airport while the vessel is moored on an island, the Seafarer Engagement Permit must be communicated to Athens Airport Passport Control. In this case, an agent must also be appointed in Athens to receive the seafarer, supervise their transfer to the domestic flight, and submit all required documents to airport passport control.

Only if this specific procedure is followed can an exit stamp be placed in the seafarer’s passport for the purpose of joining the vessel, thereby stopping the counting of days within the Schengen Area.

One of the required supporting documents is a Berthing Certificate for the vessel. This certificate for seafarer engagement is not issued by the Port Authority if the vessel is hauled out on land.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CREW ON PLEASURE YACHTS

A Seaman Book (Seafarer’s Identity Document) is an official document that confirms you are a registered crew member under international maritime regulations (ILO & STCW).

🔹 FOR PLEASURE YACHT CREW – KNOW THE RULES:

✅ Your Seaman Book is used ONLY for professional maritime purposes, not for tourism or residency.

✅ When joining or leaving a yacht, you must complete Sign On / Sign Off procedures through a local shipping agent.

✅ While cruising in Schengen waters, your stay is valid only if you are officially signed on board the yacht. Once signed off, normal immigration rules apply.

✅ In many cases, crew arriving by yacht may enter without a visa — but strictly as active crew and not as visitors.

⚠️ IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

🚫 The Seaman Book is NOT a residence permit or tourist visa.

🚫 You must remain in the area where the yacht is berthed when signed on.

🚫 Misuse (e.g., staying ashore as a tourist using a Seaman Book) can lead to fines, deportation, or bans.

🔹 As yacht crew, you are required to follow the laws of the country where the yacht is docked and the regulations of the vessel.
