The hardest HSQE challenge in tanker operations today isn't a single risk — it's the rate at which everything is changing at once.

That was the thread running through the panel at Tanker Operator Athens 2026, where our own Konstantinos Kyrou — Deputy DPA/CSO and HSQE Officer at Capital Ship Management — joined operators across the industry to discuss what's actually working on the ground.

A few of the points he made:
→ A new generation of seafarers is arriving alongside rapidly evolving onboard technology — competency systems have to keep pace with both, not just one.

→ Fatigue cannot always be solved by adding crew. The real work is in workload design, coordination, and the quality of shore-side support.

→ Digital tools are only as good as the decisions they enable. The goal isn't more data — it's better operational judgment.
The takeaway: today's HSQE performance is built where human expertise, disciplined processes, and the right technology meet — and stay in balance.

Thank you to Tanker Operator and our fellow panelists for a substantive exchange.

Capital Ship Management recently took successful delivery of the newbuilding vessel M/T 'Aristotelis II', a 307,000 dwt VLCC crude oil tanker, built by Hengli Heavy Industries in China.⁣

The vessel has been designed and constructed to exceed mandatory international environmental regulations and is classed with the ECO LR notation, including the descriptive notes EEDI-3, P, and EAL, as well as the LR NAV1 notation for enhanced navigational safety. ⁣
Numerous Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), including pre-shrouded vanes and other hydrodynamic improvements, contribute to reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.⁣

In addition, 'Aristotelis II' is assigned the fuel gas-ready notation GR(NG,A), signifying that it has been structurally and technically prepared for a future conversion to LNG propulsion, supporting long-term decarbonization strategies and ensuring continued compliance with evolving international emission standards for VLCCs.⁣

Compliance with SOx emission regulations is ensured through the installation of an open-loop Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS), accompanied by the LR notation EGCS (OPEN, Partial), enabling the vessel to operate in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI requirements.⁣

Moreover, the vessel has been delivered in full compliance with the highest industry standards, ensuring an operational framework founded on robust safety management systems, proven reliability, and environmentally responsible practices.⁣

The 'Aristotelis II' accommodation and interior design significantly exceed prevailing requirements, with particular emphasis on ergonomic design, crew comfort, and long-term habitability.⁣
The vessel’s godmother is Mrs Fan Hongwei. Delivery festivities were held at Hengli Heavy Industries, China, and were well attended by high-ranking officials from Capital Group, Hengli Group, and other organizations and companies.⁣
